(AP) ? Israel's largest party, relegated to the opposition after 2009 national elections, is to choose its leader on Tuesday in a rematch between a former peace negotiator and a one-time defense chief who directed Israel's tough response to the last Palestinian uprising.

The race between current Kadima Party chief Tzipi Livni and Shaul Mofaz is expected to be closely fought. Whoever wins will try to wrest power from Benjamin Netanyahu when Israelis next go to national elections, currently scheduled for October 2013.

Livni, 53, served as foreign minister in the previous government, and was lead negotiator with the Palestinians in the last extended round of peace talks that began in Annapolis, Maryland, in late 2007 but never seriously recovered after Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip a year later.

Mofaz, 63, was chief of the Israeli military and later defense minister during the four-year Palestinian uprising that broke out in late 2000. Although he favors peacemaking with the Palestinians, he oversaw a harsh response against Palestinian militant groups, including the assassination of militant leaders, that stirred controversy abroad.

The two also ran against each other in Kadima's last leadership contest in September 2008, which Livni won by just several hundred votes.

Kadima was founded in November 2005 by then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who defected from the Likud Party with many of its top officials in an effort to shake off constraints on peacemaking. Sharon had a calamitous stroke soon after, but despite his incapacitation, he remained the inspiration that propelled Kadima to power in early 2006 elections.

With Ehud Olmert at the helm, Kadima governed from 2006 to early 2009. A cascade of corruption allegations forced him to step down, and the party's fortunes have waned since February 2009 national elections that brought Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu to power.

In the 2009 vote, Kadima won the most parliament seats, 28 of 120, and had a chance to form Israel's government. But Livni couldn't marshal enough allies to put together a governing coalition and Netanyahu, head of the Likud, was given the task.

Kadima was sidelined to the opposition. Internally, too, it has suffered, with polls showing some former backers defecting to the Labor Party and others expected to line up behind a former television personality, Yair Lapid, who has announced plans to set up his own party.

Recent polls show Kadima would win just a dozen seats if national elections were to be held today.

The surveys show Netanyahu and his hawkish allies firmly poised to lead the government again.

Voting in the Kadima race opens at 10 a.m. (0800 GMT) Tuesday and closes 12 hours later. Some 95,000 Kadima members are eligible to vote.

Official results are expected after midnight, but indications of a winner could come earlier, based on voter turnout.

Some Chicago Doctors May Treat Poor Patients Differently ...

A recent study published on the Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research website shows that low-income patients sue health care providers less often than patients of a higher economic status do. A review of litigation rates and malpractice suits among poor patients as compared to patients of greater wealth was the basis for the research.

The research has illustrated that there may be a bias by doctors in treating poor patients because of the perceived risk of litigation. Some doctors rationalize a decision for non-treatment of low-income patients because those patients may have trouble making payment for medical services. Many physicians also believe that impoverished patients are more likely to pursue legal action against the doctor or treating facility.

The stereotypical view of a person of lesser financial stature is that they are more likely to sue, but the research shows that these people have less access to the legal resources necessary to seek any type of legal action. The fact that they lack monetary funds actually means they are less likely to initiate a medical malpractice claim or other legal proceeding against a doctor.

The bias that can exist in treating or not treating low-income patients can have serious implications for the medical well-being of the patient. Health care that is below the standard of care that any other patient would receive can obviously harm the patient's outlook and quality of life. Researchers involved with the study state that greater awareness and education on this issue would improve both patient care and doctor satisfaction.

People without financial wealth may still be able to bring successful medical malpractice lawsuits. Most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency-fee basis where the victim does not pay unless the lawyer helps them win their case.

Anderson Silva shows off ?superpowers? in latest Fox ad

Anderson Silva, the still-reigning king of the pound-for-pound rankings, showed off how he really likes to punch things in the latest ad for Fox. Like the Jon Jones ad before it, this ad shows Silva is "just a normal guy," except not at all. Judging by the aftermath Silva's punches left in his neighborhood, Chael Sonnen should be concerned about what he will look like after their bout on June 23.

Two more Archos Arnova tablets roll through the FCC

Image
When it rains Archos tablets, it pours Archos tablets. A day after The Arnova A9 G3 tablet strutted its way through the commission's approval process and into our hearts, two more members of the line the are ready for their cold, governmental closeups. Archos's Arnova 7F G3 and 8C G3 have also found their way onto the the FCC's site, carrying on the company's long standing policy of making a heck of a lot of tablets -- these ones, most likely, are set to serve as the seven and eight-inch counterparts to their slightly larger, slightly older sibling.

March 27, 1964: The Great Alaskan Earthquake

?One day earthquake and thunder decided to explore the world, but doing so they reached only a desolate and dry plateau. Earthquake noted that the land was located much too high in the sky for humans ?They will have no food, if there is no place for the creatures of the sea to live in!? Earthquake begun to shake, stronger and stronger, until the earth finally collapsed and the sea inundated the land. Earthquake was satisfied ?From here, they will obtain what they need to live, where prairie has become water?. This is what brings to the people life.? Thunder acknowledged what earthquake had done ?It is true. So they will survive!? and so they went further north and together they lowered the land and created the western coast.?
The creation of the world according to a legend of the Yurok people (Cascade Range)

In the late afternoon of March 27, 1964 Alaska was shaken for five minutes by one of the strongest earthquakes ever to be recorded in modern times, with a magnitude of 8.3 ? 9.2 after Richter (the earthquake was so strong that no seismometer in the affected area recorded it correctly).
The earthquake displaced almost the entire southern coast of Alaska along the Prince William Sound, some areas were raised by 9 meters (30 feet) above the sea level, other level dropped below sea level and became inundated later by the sea (maybe the Yurok myth is based on the observation of such a similar environmental change after an earthquake in prehistoric times along the western coast of the U.S.).

Video 1. Showing the ?Ghost Forest? of the 1964 ?quake. In the lowered regions the trees were killed by the salt water, later deposited marsh sediments again raised the surface and tundra vegetation recolonized the area.

The earthquake caused heavy damage on 75% of buildings and infrastructure in the affected area, most in the city of Anchorage, 131 people were killed.
Large fissures opened in the ground when the groundwater liquefied the soil and more than 2.000 landslides and avalanches occurred across south-central Alaska. Buildings in Seattle (Washington) begun to swing by the approaching seismic wave and the ground was measurable deformed even in Florida.

In some lakes in Alaska the movement of the water catapulted chunks of ice onto the land, causing damage on the surrounding trees up to 9 meters (30 feet) above ground. Unusual water movements, attributed cautiously to the earthquake, were observed in South Dakota and apparently even in Puerto Rico and Australia.
Most remarkable was the generated tsunami, waves higher than usual were observed even along the Japanese coast. The seaport of Valdez was destroyed by a 30 meter high tsunami, 32 people died there. For hours after the earthquake the sea was tumultuous and in the evening with the high tide the reflected waves of the first tsunami inundated the surviving area of the city of Valdez.
Six hours after the earthquake the tsunami reached the island of Vancouver, one hour later the coast of Oregon and the wave caused damage even in Crescent City and Los Angeles (California).

Many of these phenomena were studied for the very first time by scientists ? only two hours after the earthquake the first geologists arrived to Anchorage.

Curren$y 'Learned More About The Business' Dealing With Damon Dash

MC talks to MTV News about working with the former Roc-A-Fella CEO, whom he is reportedly suing for selling his music without permission.

Curren$y and Damon Dash may not see eye to eye, but the Hot Spitter admits that he learned a lot trying to do business with his one-time friend. On Sunday, TMZ reported that Curren$y filed a lawsuit against Dame claiming that the former Roc-A-Fella CEO was selling his music without permission and is now seeking $1.5 million in damages.

During an interview with MTV News last week, the New Orleans MC admitted that he has learned a lot working with Dash, as well as other notable CEOs he was once signed to like Master P and Birdman. "You run the list, I've picked up game from all of them, man, Master P, Baby. Me and Wayne made hours and hours and hours and hours' worth of music in the studio, Dame," Curren$y told MTV News on March 21. "I been around some people, made moves and soaked it all up."

In the early 2000s, Curren$y, as a member of the 504 Boyz, was signed to No Limit Records, where he appeared on a number of label releases. "What I got from P was the amount of projects there should always be, something happening from your label to keep you relevant," he said. "Something should always be poppin'."

He then inked with Lil Wayne's Young Money company, developing a unique recording process alongside Weezy, with whom he appeared on several mixtape tracks. "What I got from Cash Money, what I got from being around Wayne so much I guess the studio work," he said. "We had the same work ethic and that's how I realized I wasn't crazy." Next Curren$y hooked up with Dame Dash's DD172 label, and together they released Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II in 2010. According to TMZ, while both albums were released through Dash's label, the two had never reached a concrete agreement. Spitta then went ahead and signed with Warner Bros., where he dropped Weekend at Burnie's through his own imprint, Jet Life, in 2011.

Now Curren$y is demanding that Dame stop selling his LPs. Dash claims that he is well within his rights and that the rapper did in fact grant him permission, but a judge has yet to rule on the case. Even though the union is now marred in negativity, Curren$y contends that it was a learning experience. "With my last situation, I think I've learned more about the business," he said, referencing Dame's DD172. "I've learned more about the business through that prior situation."

Investors get hungry for Lions Gate

Allison Joyce / Reuters

Fans line up to see the midnight shows of "The Hunger Games" at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square Theatre in New York March 22, 2012.

By Martha C. White

As countless reviewers have pointed out, teenagers killing each other in a futuristic gladiatorial arena doesn't sound like promising blockbuster material. Boy, were they wrong.

The first installment of "The Hunger Games," based on the first novel of a trilogy by author Suzanne Collins, surpassed expectations with an opening weekend take of $155 million in the United States. Analysts say the blockbuster has catapulted Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.?into the big leagues, raising both the studio's profile and the stakes for its future projects.?

Investors were as excited as moviegoers, with the stock up more than?4 percent at $15.16?by midafternoon Monday. "It bodes well for the overall performance of the first film and it bodes extremely well for the prospects of the rest of the movies they plan to produce," Marla Backer, managing director at Hudson Square Research, said.?

To a certain extent, an expectation of success was already baked into the share price, which had been on an upward trajectory thanks to pre-release buzz about the movie. But $155 million blew the doors off even the most optimistic projections. J.P. Morgan, which predicted a $120 million to $130 million opening weekend, raised its estimates and set a price target of $18 by December. In a research note, analyst Monica DiCenso called the franchise "transformative" for Lions Gate.

How well the movie does this coming weekend will affect investor sentiment. "If it holds well in its second weekend, then the stock should continue to advance," Doug Creutz, analyst at Cowen & Co., said via email.?

Some think this is likely. "Original movies tend to hold better than sequels," Matthew Harrigan, an senior analyst at Wunderlich Securities, said. Harrigan predicted many fans will see the movie again and said next weekend is likely to include a wave of adult moviegoers who sat out the opening weekend's teen fan frenzy. The movie's second weekend "could be another $90 million," he said.

A broader effect of "The Hunger Games" is that more investors are now looking at Lions Gate's entire portfolio and liking what they see, analysts say. "I think there are a lot of people looking at the company now with fresh eyes," Backer said.?

In a CNBC interview Monday, DiCenso pointed out that Lions Gate has relied on sequels for some time with franchises like Tyler Perry and "Saw" and predicted a more aggressive expansion of this strategy.

"What you see now when you look at their slate is a significantly expanded franchise slate," she said. In addition to TV hits like "Mad Men," which its television division produces, Lions Gate also acquired Summit Entertainment this year. Summit is the studio behind the blockbuster "Twilight" franchise, the final installment of which is scheduled to be released this year.

The flip side of "The Hunger Games'" huge initial success is that the stakes are much higher for the remaining three movies planned for the series. (Like the "Harry Potter" franchise and "Twilight," the final book in the trilogy is being split into two films.) The movie was made for a relatively modest $80 million and promoted for $45 million, but analysts say the sequels will probably have bigger production and marketing budgets.

While the record for the biggest opening weekend still goes to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," the final movie in the?Potter series, analysts say Hunger Games is much more important to Lions Gate than the boy wizard was to Warner Bros. and parent company Time Warner.?

"Remember, Time Warner is a company with a?market cap of $41 billion and $52 billion in enterprise value," Alan Gould, entertainment analyst Evercore Partners, said. "Harry Potter was great? but it didn't move the needle that much for a company the size of Time Warner."

By contrast, Gould said Lions Gate's enterprise value is around $2.5 billion, and some analysts predict that the Hunger Games franchise could generate $1.5 billion in profit.?Enterprise value is a broader measure of a company's value that includes market capitalization plus debt, preferred shares and minority interest, minus cash and cash equivalents.?

"This is going to be their baby for a long time," Backer said.
