Off Fiscal Cliff, Obama Goes Golfing

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Taking a break from the fiscal cliff negotiations, President Obama is spending the first day of his holiday vacation golfing with friends and aides, including longtime pal Bobby Titcomb, who was arrested last year on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute.

After arriving in Hawaii late last night, the president spent this morning at his family's vacation residence along the shores of Kailua, a quiet town on a stretch of beach on the east end of Oahu.

Shortly before noon, the president made the trip to the Kailua Marine Corps Base, where he is hitting the links at the Kaneohe Clipper course.

Obama is golfing with close aide Marvin Nicholson, White House chef Sam Kass, and childhood friends Mike Ramos and Titcomb, whom the president has known since they attended Honolulu's Punahou School together in the 1970s.

Titcomb was arrested in April 2011 in an undercover prostitution sting operation. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge and the conviction was reportedly later expunged from his record.

With negotiations over the deficit at a standstill and Congress closed for the Christmas holiday, the first family left Washington late Friday for their annual vacation in Obama's native state, his first vacation of the year.

The president told reporters in a hastily scheduled appearance in the briefing room that he would "see you next week." His return date is still to be determined.

UK prosecutors consider charges over royal hoax call

LONDON (Reuters) - British detectives investigating the death of a nurse found hanged after she took a prank phone call at a hospital treating Prince William's pregnant wife Kate have passed an evidence file to prosecutors, police said on Saturday.

Public prosecutors must decide whether the case is strong enough to bring charges over a stunt that was condemned around the world and fuelled concerns about media ethics.

Indian-born Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was found hanging in her hospital lodgings in London, days after she answered the hoax call from an Australian radio station, an inquest heard.

She put the call through to a colleague who disclosed details of the Duchess of Cambridge's condition during treatment for an extreme form of morning sickness in the early stages of pregnancy.

"Officers submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for them to consider whether any potential offences may have been committed by making the hoax call," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

A CPS spokesman confirmed it had received the file, but declined to comment on the timing or nature of possible charges.

"That is what we will be considering," he said.

Prime Minister David Cameron has described the case as a "complete tragedy" and has said many lessons will have to be learned from the nurse's death.

Australia's media regulator has launched an investigation into the phone call. Southern Cross Austereo, parent company of radio station 2Day FM, has apologised for the stunt.

Britain's own media is already under pressure to agree a new system of self-regulation and avoid state intervention following a damning inquiry into reporting practices.

The presenters who made the call, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, have apologised for their actions.

What Einstein's Secret Papers Reveal About Small Business ...

Theory of relativity in small business marketingMarketing can seem as complex as Einstein?s theory of relativity at times.? Many people look at small business marketing just as they look at a board full of formulae and consider it arcane and incomprehensible!

But it really isn?t so complex.? It does have a lot of moving parts and there are many ways to go about marketing successfully.? At its essence small business marketing is really focused on three simple outcomes:

  1. attracting prospects and building a relationship with them
  2. transforming prospects into customers and keeping them as customers
  3. measuring the process and outcomes so you can do it again and get better at it

Anything else you hear relates back to one of those three.? If it doesn?t, it probably isn?t worth doing.

So let?s consider what Einstein might have to say about marketing by examining some of his lost papers with explanations of what he actually meant by his statements?

?Insanity:? doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

Do you find yourself just adding more hours to your work day to do more of the same when it comes to marketing in hopes of producing better results?? Look at point number three above?? If it isn?t working (and you?re measuring right?) than it?s time to rethink and adjust.

?We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them?

Take a step back and examine how you?re designing and executing your marketing.? Considering points 1-3 above, rethink whether you?re current way of marketing is the best path to produce the results you want.? Think outside the box and be creative.

Try new things in small business marketing?A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new?

Great point, Albert!? Make mistakes, try new things, and measure results.? Reinforce the methods that worked and drop those that don?t.

?Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex? It takes a touch of genius ? and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.?

Do you have a dozen projects ongoing?? Are you trying a half dozen new marketing techniques at a time?? Or my favorite, do you have multiple to do lists and organizers that take more time to update than completing the actions recorded within would?? Keep it simple and direct.? Stay focused.? Measure.? Measure. Measure.

Frequently, it?s the lack of clear outcomes that cause so many of our digital marketing problems.? What caused customers to buy?? What brought them here in the first place?? If you don?t know, it?s easy to keep doing everything because if you stop doing an action, it might be the one that was working.? Don?t fall into this trap, measure and be ruthless.? Pinterest might be loads of fun to browse, but if it isn?t producing business outcomes for you, do it some other time!

?Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves?

Keep your focus and attention on what is important!? In small business marketing or, this would be akin to doing a half dozen different techniques at once.? Focus on two or three methods and get great at them.? If you get them efficient and automated, then consider adding another and so on.? But don?t do to much at once and be average at everything.

Small business marketing should be funMarketing should be fun and effective.? After all, you?re sharing the value you bring with the people who would most benefit from that value.? What?s not fun about that?

Einstein left another collection of seven steps to fantastic marketing which you can find here.

Cheers!

The Board Game Family Great Stocking Stuffer Card Games - The ...

Hive pocket

Get a mini version of Hive!

With just a couple days to go before Christmas, it?s time to make sure Santa has his stocking stuffers in order. So if you?re helping Santa out this year, here?s a few ideas of card games and dice games that will fit great in those Christmas stockings.

There are a couple of fun dice games that come in small canisters tubes that fit perfectly in stockings:

Martian Dice

Let your inner Martian out!

Both games are simple dice rolling games where players press their luck. In Martian Dice players compete to abduct chickens, cows, and humans while defending from tanks with their ray guns. Players roll all 13 dice and set aside dice that they want to keep and keep rolling to see how many items they can abduct without going bust (rolling more tanks than ray guns).

In Zombie Dice players are trying to collect as many brains as they can before shotgun blasts end their turn. Besides the theme, the big difference in Zombie Dice is that players only roll 3 dice on their turn. Those 3 dice are randomly pulled from the canister. The dice have different combinations of brains, footsteps, and shotgun blasts on them that change the probabilities of what players will roll. Once again players roll until they choose to stop and score brains or go bust from 3 shotgun blasts.

Card games are also great for stocking stuffers because they?re so compact. There are a number that come in tins that are fun to stuff in Christmas stockings.

We?ve reviewed 7 ate 9 and Super Circles before and you can see our quick reviews of these fun, light card games in a combined video review.

Little Devils card game

Little Devils can pack a punch.

Little Devils is a simple card game where players are trying to push all cards onto their opponents for negative points. It?s a trick taking card game that?s simple to play and has a unique twist where the second player to play a card each round sets how the trick is won. The number of negative devil points on each card varies from 0 to 5 so players have to think carefully when to play which cards. Yes, a lot of the game depends on which cards you start out with, but making good decisions on when to play each card can swing that luck. And since it?s played over a number of rounds, the luck will even out amongst the players. Fun little card game.

Crazy Creatures of Dr Gloom

Fun card manipulation.

Crazy Creatures of Dr. Gloom is another card game where players score negative points. If the round ends with cards in their hands, players get negative points. But it?s the unique way players get rid of their cards that makes this game fun. Players get rid of their cards by playing them next to the color-associated machine card. There are 4 machines on the table (red, blue, green, yellow) with a plus or minus sign on the card. If it?s a plus, players have to play a card of equal or higher value to what?s already next to the machine (opposite for minus). The twist is being able to manipulate the machines to change them between their plus and minus sides which may block other players from being able to play their cards. It?s simple and quick to play with a mix of luck and strategy and has fun art on the cards ? making it a great family card game.

Anomia card game

Simple party fun.

Here?s also a couple party games that could easily fit into Christmas stockings.

Anomia is a fun party game that tends to cause brain freeze as players race to shout out things when a matching card symbol appears (see our full review). Who Would Win is great for those who like to debate crazy things. Would Darth Vader or Barbie win at a dog show? If you?ve got some debaters in your family or circle of friends this could be a great stocking stuffer gift.

Yamslam pocket

Fun Yahtzee variant.

Here are a few other games that fit great as stocking suffers.

People to be encouraged to save and manage debt in 2013 | Latest ...

by News Team on December 21st, 2012

Consumers in the UK are being encouraged to look after their finances in 2013.

The Money Advice Service is launching an eight-week consultation as it seeks to establish what its priorities will be in the coming 12 months, with these expected to include getting younger and low-middle income families to become more financially savvy.

It is seeking to redress two key statistics ? that 76 per cent of UK adults are not regularly saving and 22 per cent are failing to set cash aside for their retirement ? and so is hoping to run 150,000 debt advice sessions next year.

Gerard Lemos, chairman of the body, said that in the current economic climate, it is important people can access "real help" in an effort to solve their financial issues.

"In tough times, it's right that we prioritise those with the greatest need of support to manage their money. That's why young adults and low to middle income families are at the heart of this plan.

"And it's why we've focussed on helping people take everyday practical steps with money to weather life's ups and downs and plan for their and their family's futures."

It comes after research carried out by the Centre for Economics and Business Research discovered that financial illiteracy is costing the UK ?3.4 billion. Because of the lack of basic financial knowledge of many people in the country, people are failing to get the best deals on offer.

According to the study, financial education can reduce the risk of unemployment by ten per cent, while the expense associated with retirement could drop by one-third. As well as this, people may be in a better position to use debt help.

Justin Tomlinson MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People, said the financial world is becoming increasingly complex and so UK adults need to improve their skills to account for this.

Path Makes Social Search Personal

Path, a social networking startup designed for the mobile environment, on Thursday launched a new social search feature that is both simple and highly intuitive -- and that plays to Path's unique strengths as a private mobile social network. A user might search for "rainy day in New Orleans" or "winter in Washington, D.C.," or "Mom happy at her birthday party," for example.
