???????, ?????? ? ????? ????? ? Inexpensive Car Insurance in ...

30 Dec 2012

Looking for inexpensive California automobile insurance? The key to finding the cheapest California auto insurance costs would be to take advantage of discounts, buy just the quantity of insurance that you?ll require, and to continually check around for California car insurance quotations from many different insurance companies at least once every six months. After all, California auto insurance rates change generally and its up to you to spend a few moments doing some research so that you can buy a cheap California auto insurance plan for yourself!California is among the greatest states in the complete nation with an estimated 36,457,549 million people and specialists only forecast that it will continue to develop (it?s produced an unbelievable 7.6% from 2005 to 2006). With therefore many people living in the state, one can only feel that there will be many more motorists entering the this area of the Usa, thus more automobiles will be on the highways of California in years to come. Because of the it?s no real surprise that rates in California can get to be extremely expensive when it comes to automobile insurance, especially in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. It is essential to understand however, that prospective customers can still find inexpensive CA automobile insurance if they look around and do anything they need certainly to do before selecting a business. A very important factor concerning this state is that?s great diversity when it comes to population. People from around the world come to California to reside and due to this automobile insurance companies have to design their coverage to them. Before even choosing the kind of coverage you want from a particular automobile insurance business it is important to know the state needs (or state?s minimums) for California. This will enable you to start to see the least insurance possible that you can select from a specific auto insurance company, hence it?ll give the lowest priced price to you possible. The state of California determines that one must be responsible for their very own actions when it comes to operating an auto and that a person must understand the danger associated with being behind the wheel of a car.The statutory limitations for automobile Insurance within the state of California are 15/30/5. This implies that any person driving a car in the highways of this state has to have a minimum of Bodily Injury of 15,000 for death of damage of any one person, Bodily Injury or 30,000 for all people in one accident and Property Damage of $5,000 per accident. This is apparent as California law is wanting to prevent legitimate arbitrations toward any driver when is concerns auto accidents. One factor of note is that while getting the minimum coverage can help you with the charges, in case of an accident you?ll not have extensive or collision coverage. Also, those people that bought an and are still making payments about it, or those of you who hired a vehicle will not be able to get minimum coverage (they?re needed to have thorough and collision coverage). Because of this reason, it is very important to keep in mind not merely how much money you could afford when purchasing a car, but how much your insurance may increase if you purchase it.Apart from obtaining the minimum insurance that the state of California enforces there are numerous other activities a driver must take into account if they desire a cheap California automobile insurance coverage. One of them is to try and get a deductible; however it must be a deductible that they can afford in case something happens. If you possess a somewhat old car and are completed making payments on the automobile you should really be ok with a minimal coverage and a high deductible (the lowest priced automobile insurance policy), however if you want to be protected and have an out of pocket expense in case something happens try a low deductible. The most typical deductible is that of $500 because it?s not to low or excessive at the same time, but people may even get so far as having a $1000 deductible which might decrease their rates dramatically.Last but not least is it important to mention the range of savings that California car insurance companies offer to reduce the rates of potential customers seeking to sign up for their programs. These savings can function as the main thing in regards to cheap auto insurance rates in the state of California. One thing that can definitely help your rate is when you yourself have a clean driving record. Since the state of California is especially when it concerns traffic, a busy one, insurance companies will decrease your rate if you?re a good driver and drive defensively. If you get yourself a DUI in the state, expect you?ll pay significantly more than double what you?d for car insurance.Another important discount that almost all insurance companies provide is that of automobile equipment. If you have security features such as for example air bags, anti-theft alarms, anti-lock brakes and any others; then you will be good to get when it comes to savings. Remember that theft is just a high risk that insurance companies base their rates on, so if you attempt to stop it with your characteristics, your charge is likely to be much lower.Last however not least it is good to go over different savings such as for instance good student and authorized driver?s certificate. This first one if significant because as your driving career is started by you you?ll be hit hard with high insurance rates just because you wont have experience and insurance companies are going for a risk by assuring you. If you are a scholar that makes good grades, you?ll be able to have discounts. Also, if you go and attend a defensive people course, many California Auto Insurance Companies will be able to give you a huge discount mainly because you learned strategies that will help you develop into a better driver.

PFT: Bills, Jets end bad years, and changes will come

Chicago Bears v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Chicago remains in contention for an NFC wild card berth, and the defending Super Bowl champion Giants have been eliminated, after the Bears beat the Lions 26-24 on Sunday in Detroit.

The Bears? victory keeps them alive heading into this afternoon?s Packers-Vikings game, which the Bears now need the Packers to win. If Green Bay wins, the Bears are the NFC?s sixth seed. If Minnesota wins, the Vikings are the NFC?s sixth seed.

Sunday?s win wasn?t easy for Chicago: Although the Bears jumped out to an early 20-3 lead, the Lions came back in it and cut the deficit to 26-24 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Lions? offense went three-and-out when they got the ball back while down two in the fourth, then the Lions? defense failed to stop the Bears from running out the clock.

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, who entered the game with an NFL-record 1,892 receiving yards this season, finished the game with 72 yards, meaning he fell short of 2,000 by 36. Johnson?s NFL record streak of eight consecutive 100-yard receiving games also comes to an end. Bears cornerback Charles Tillman did excellent work against Johnson in both of this season?s Bears-Lions games: Johnson averaged 53 yards in the Lions? two games against the Bears, while averaging 133 yards a game in the Lions? other 14 games.

For the Bears, today?s solid effort gives them a good chance of reaching the postseason, and also gives coach Lovie Smith a good chance of saving his job. For the Lions, a disappointing season has come to an end ? a season when Johnson was fantastic, but there was little else to celebrate.

STRAWBERRYLUCIOUS POPPERS

INGREDIENTS:
2-3 dozen large fresh strawberries
1 8oz frozen round tub of COOL WHIP whipped topping
1 16 oz. container of sour cream
1 3.4 oz. box of vanilla pudding (we are using the powder not making the pudding)

READY, SET GO:

  • Clean all strawberries
  • Slice small piece from bottom of strawberries so they can stand on their own without falling over
  • Cut top off strawberries
  • Core and make a well in the strawberries with a small melon baller or small knife (be careful not to cut yourself)

NOW LETS MAKE THE FRUIT DIP

  • Add whipped topping, sour cream and powder from box of vanilla pudding in a bowl and whisk together until you have a smooth whipped consistency
  • Add fruit dip to piping bag with a star tip at the end (cut end of bag so tip sticks out of course)

LET?S FINISH THE STRAWBERRIES

  • Pipe fruit dip in the well of the strawberries and swirl a few times at the top so you have a small hill of fruit dip on top of the strawberries
  • Plate and serve or just pop a few in your mouth!!

ENJOY, ENJOY, ENJOY

Do You Pay Attention to Your Credit Score?Your credit score isn't everything, but it can greatly affect your financial future (getting a job, new home, and insurance). The NY Times is reporting that bad credit might even ruin your dating chances. So, we're curious, Lifehacker readers: How much do you care and pay attention to your score?

People who are looking to make a big financial decision or looking for a new job would do well to check and work on improving their credit scores, but for everyone else, how close an eye do you keep on your score and credit reports? If good credit is starting to increasingly matter in other areas of life, such as dating, does it matter more to you?

Sound out in the comments.

Kitten marks 11,000th Oregon Humane Society adoption in 2012 ...

A brown tabby kitten became the 11,000th animal adopted this year from the Oregon Humane Society, the third year in a row the agency has achieved that amount.

The 3-month-old, 3-pound feline, named Azazel, was adopted about 2 p.m. Thursday by a Lake Oswego woman, said David Lytle, an agency spokesman.

He estimated at least 100 more dogs, cats and other small animals will find homes before 2012 ends.

"Our yearly goal is to find homes for at least 11,000 animals," Lytle said. "For us to hit that mark for another year is an accomplishment."

Last week, 106 animals were adopted Dec. 20, a single-day record for the Humane Society. Last year, it set a record of 11,521 animals adopted, the most since the society's new shelter in Portland opened in 2000, Lytle said.

The society has slashed adoption fees by 50 percent or more to empty its kennels and other animal areas.

Fees, which include spaying or neutering, initial shots and microchips, range from $50 for a dog 1 year and older to $12 for an adult cat. Puppies, which are not discounted, still cost $200 to $400.

The shelter, 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd., is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday.

Lynne Terry of The Oregonian contributed to this story.

Therapists Spill: My New Year's Resolution | World of Psychology

Therapists Spill: My New Years Resolution The end of the year is a time for self-reflection, while the beginning brings a clean slate, hope and new-found motivation, said Deborah Serani, Psy.D, a clinical psychologist and author of the book Living with Depression.

That?s why so many people use this time to create resolutions. In our monthly series, ?Therapists Spill,? we wanted to know what goals clinicians are setting for their fresh starts.

For instance, Serani is setting both personal and professional goals ? with an emphasis on realistic resolutions.

I like to set realistic goals for myself each year. Some are personal, like exercising more and eating better. Others are professional, such as researching a new subject or presenting at a conference. Of course, I don?t always achieve all these goals. But for me, I know that thinking about change leads me toward change. And that?s a good way to start the year.

Joyce Marter, a psychotherapist and owner of Urban Balance, has three resolutions for the new year, which focus on gratitude, mindfulness and self-care.

I very much believe in the power of gratitude as a way to encourage positive thinking and good energy that will attract blessings, such as positive people, experiences and opportunities in the New Year.

I love the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn and Eckhart Tolle and am committed to continue developing my practices of meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga and other mindfulness techniques to anchor myself in the present. Mindfulness practices keep me from obsessing from the past or worrying about the future and also help me be more aware of my emotional and physical state. I find that when I am rooted in the present, I am more conscious and better able to detach from my ego and live my life authentically.

As a mother in a care-taking profession, I have a bad habit of putting my needs last, to a fault.? Therefore, I am committed to a lifelong journey of practicing healthy self-love. To help myself with this goal in 2013, I put a small, framed picture of myself as a baby on my nightstand.? Each morning, I look at it and set intentions for self-care for the day (healthy diet, exercise, rest, fun, etc.).

Somehow, it is easier for me to validate my self-care if I take a moment to reflect that I am that precious child in the photo ? and that as an adult, I have the responsibility to take the very best care of myself so that I can live a healthy life personally and professionally.

Gratitude also is a goal for John Duffy, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist and author of the book The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and Tweens.

In 2013, my plan is to be present, in each moment, and to be grateful. There are many, many things I intend to accomplish in the coming year, but if I can achieve presence and gratitude, I am confident that all else will fall into place beautifully.

Ryan Howes, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist in Pasadena, California, takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to setting resolutions.

I hate to be contrarian, but resolutions sort of drive me crazy. Part of me loves to target areas to improve, while another part strives for self-acceptance. New Year?s resolutions force me to pit these competing drives against each other. For this reason, I usually avoid making resolutions, but this year I?ll make an exception:

1. Run a 40 minute 10K

2. Measure happiness qualitatively, not quantitatively

3. Get a book deal

4. Be less goal oriented; enjoy the journey

5. Increase Facebook fans

6. Increase humility

7. Change bad habits

8. Accept self as-is

Jeffrey Sumber, M.A., a psychotherapist, author and teacher, resolves to focus on the people in his life for 2013.

Something I intend for the new year is to give more attention and care to my relationships rather than acquiring things, doing things or being someone I think I should be. I want to honor the people in my life and remember that they are the most important part of my life.

Christina G. Hibbert, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and postpartum mental health expert, doesn?t set goals. Instead, she sets a theme for each new year.

I do have a main ?goal? for 2013 ? to see the publishing of my book, This is How We Grow. But really, I don?t set ?goals? or ?resolutions? for the New Year. It?s actually something I share in my book ? several years ago, in an attempt to get away from the too-easily forgotten New Year?s ?resolutions,? I developed instead a yearly theme.

This theme would serve as my one ?resolution? for the entire year and give me focused, extended practice in mastering it. A few of my past year?s themes include: humility, charity, patience, gratitude, love, and joy.

At the end of each year I spend time reading through my past year?s journal (I?m an avid journal-keeper), allowing myself to reflect on what I?ve learned, where I am, and where I need to be headed. This helps me determine what my theme for the next year will be. Sometimes I know my theme a couple months before; often, I don?t know it until January 1!

So, what will my theme be for 2013? Right now I?m leaning toward ?Optimism,? but, since I haven?t done my ?year in review,? if you really want to know my 2013 theme, you?ll have to tune in to my blog in January and find out!

These resolutions have one thing in common: They focus on each person?s values. Whether you?re setting resolutions this year or not, consider striving for a life that honors what?s important to you and isn?t shaped by shoulds. Consider creating a life that respects your needs and wishes.

Some write of the practice of setting New Year?s resolutions.? Often business based or self improvement based articles talk about goal setting.? Goal setting and making promises as to what we will do are admirable traits.? However, overwhelming oneself with too many goals or unrealistic targets is not.? Do you have thoughts on how to avoid that for yourself?

Sometimes when I work with clients they are very definitive on what they want to accomplish.? Other times they?re often unsure of what they want to do next.? It is not wise for one to make definitive goal statements if you?re unsure about your commitment to them.? For example, if 2013 is the year you say to yourself you are going to move out of that job you hate, perhaps a way to start off the year is committing to do a certain amount of research each day or week to explore what professions may be of interest to you.? If you have habits that you are trying to change, instead of indicating that you are going to make a complete change of habit, committing to reducing the bad habit as the year starts may be a more sensible approach in terms of getting started.

On a more somber note, I have spoken of the devastation in my home state from a major storm in late October.? There are many with substantial rebuilding that needs to be done to their property.? In other instances, there are individuals who are essentially starting over.? A plight such as this can be extremely overwhelming.? In fact, it is possible that at this time, a person does not even have all the answers on how to move forward.? However, committing to take those one or two steps one can take at the moment, with the knowledge that other steps can be thought out or committed to later on in the process, is a way to begin down a path in the New Year that keeps one?s energy level positive and moving forward.

Therefore, my advice to my readers as they begin 2013 is to make a list of items you want to accomplish in the coming year, and select perhaps only one or two you want to focus on as the year starts.? Even with those items, identify that first step or two you want to take toward it.? Make sure those steps are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and have a sensible time orientation to them.? For example if you say you are going to accomplish a step by the end of the 2nd week of January, and you know the step will take you four weeks to complete, you have set yourself up for failure before you have even gotten started.? If the accomplishment is that important to you and you feel it must be completed in a specified time frame, do you have the right resources to complete it?? Do you need to seek assistance from others?? Are those you need to help you able to commit to you during the time you require?? Again, if not, you are setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment unless you have an alternate plan.

The storm that came to my area of the United States in late October showed that not all factors are in our hands.? External forces can have an impact on the best of plans and intentions.? However, what we do have some say over is our own inner energy level and the approaches we take to that which we look to achieve.? If we?re honest with ourselves in that planning, realistic to what may be able to be achieved and what is not, willing to acknowledge points of accomplishment along the way and sensitive enough to adapt if unforeseen occurrences happen, it makes for a more energetic and fulfilling life that we live.? Therefore, to all who continue to faithfully follow these postings on a regular basis a Happy New Year for 2013, and may you patiently yet steadfastly move forward toward all that you are looking to accomplish in the coming year.

LeaseQ Reports Equipment Lending Up 3.2% In November

LeaseQ, one of the leading providers of commercial and business equipment leasing and financing in the United States, is reporting an increase in equipment based lending for the month of November, on the order of 3.2%. The increased business was first reported in a survey taken by the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA), noting that more than $6.4 billion in new equipment was financed during the month, up from $6.2 billion during the same period the previous year.

The growth of sales and orders for several capital equipment companies dropped off some in November, a clear reflection of buyers increasing doubts and worries over the long term strength of the US economy, unclear visibility on economic conditions for the end-market, and growing anxiety over the so-called fiscal cliff crisis. The conventional wisdom is that any additional growth may have been stunted over the possibility of higher taxes and cuts in government spending.

Spending for equipment needs has grown faster in than most other areas of the broader US economy, with more and more companies replacing worn out or outdated material after having had to defer such projects for much of the recession that began in 2008. Since the beginning of this year, however, financing volume has been back up over 15% to $72.2 billion. December is also likely to show a demonstrable surge in spending as companies rush to complete 2012 capital spending programs before the end of the year. December is almost always the busiest month of the year for financing activities.

In other related activity, credit portfolio quality was mixed in November, with loans and leases past due by more than 30 days accounting for about 2% of net receivables. This was after six months of consecutive drops. Charge offs amounted to 0.5% of net receivables, and the approval rate for loans and leases was 77% in November.

Respondents in the survey included Welss Fargo, Bank Of America, Fifth Third Bank, Caterpillar, Deere & Co., Volvo, and Dell.

Based in Boston MA, LeaseQ is one of the leading providers of commercial equipment lease finance options in the United States, offering a wide range of lending options for everything from small business startups to Fortune 500 companies.

Entertain me - Peachyllion

Hey fellow rper, I'm glad you took interest in my thread :)

Image

So let me make my interests short, simple and hopefully sweet enough for you liking!

I'm looking to create a roleplay through collaborative efforts that involve much planning and test trials, filled with juicy, meaty characters going on one helluva rollar coaster ride that doesn't quite cooperate with their own agenda-- which means I'm looking for extremes. I want hot, I want cold, and everything in between. But, of course, just a pinch here and there, not too over done. And it has to be as real as you could possibly make it. As long as you try, I'm cool with that. Because I definitely don't tolerate bullshit. Not that I'm saying any of you would! I just mean, I appreciate thoughtful writing :) And if there ever comes a time you lose interest, be honest about it! I won't get offended. I would if you start faking it.

I come with expectations to be met with, and I, in turn, anticipate expectations of your own. If our needs don't match, a successful collaboration won't be possible. So I encourage you to stick with your standards; don't short change yourself.

Currently, I've been interested in exploring issues us humans face, i.e. poverty, psychological disorders, emotional/physical abuse, etc.
I also lean towards fantasy, romance, slightly adventure and action genres. I enjoy sci-fi, dystopian, and mystery, however I'm not as experienced in that as the before mentioned.

I actually have a few ideas in mind to start with, and if you're interested in exploring the human condition, PM or post below~

I look forward to potentially working with you! :)

Israel rejects US gun lobby claims on its security

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's policy on issuing guns is restrictive, and armed guards at its schools are meant to stop terrorists, not crazed or disgruntled gunmen, experts said Monday, rejecting claims by America's top gun lobby that Israel serves as proof for its philosophy that the U.S. needs more weapons, not fewer.

Far from the image of a heavily armed population where ordinary people have their own arsenals to repel attackers, Israel allows its people to acquire firearms only if they can prove their professions or places of residence put them in danger. The country relies on its security services, not armed citizens, to prevent terror attacks.

Though military service in Israel is compulsory, routine familiarity with weapons does not carry over into civilian life. Israel has far fewer private weapons per capita than the U.S., and while there have been gangster shootouts on the streets from time to time, gun rampages outside the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are unheard of.

The National Rifle Association responded to the Dec. 14 killing of 20 first-graders and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school by resisting calls for tighter gun control and calling for armed guards and police at schools. On Sunday, the lobby's chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, invoked his perception of the Israeli school security system to back his proposal.

"Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing: They said, 'We're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school and they have not had a problem since then," LaPierre said on the NBC News show "Meet the Press."

Israel never had "a whole lot of school shootings." Authorities could only recall two in the past four decades.

In 1974, 22 children and three adults were killed in a Palestinian attack on an elementary school in Maalot, near the border with Lebanon. The attackers' goal was to take the children hostage and trade them for imprisoned militants.

In 2008, another Palestinian assailant killed eight young people, most of them teens, at a nighttime study session at a Jewish religious seminary in Jerusalem. An off-duty soldier who happened to be in the area killed the attacker with his personal firearm.

Israel didn't mandate armed guards at the entrances to all schools until 1995, the Education Ministry said ? more than two decades after the Maalot attack and two years after a Palestinian militant wounded five pupils and their principal in a knifing at a Jerusalem school.

Israel's lightly armed school guards are not the first or the last line of defense. They are backed up by special police forces on motorcycles that can be on the scene within minutes ? again bringing out the main, but not the only, difference between the two systems.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor spelled it out.

"We're fighting terrorism, which comes under very specific geopolitical and military circumstances. This is not something that compares with the situation in the U.S," Palmor said.

Because it is aimed at preventing terror attacks, Israel's school security system is part of a multi-layered defense strategy that focuses on prevention and doesn't depend on a guy at a gate with a gun.

Intelligence gathering inside Palestinian territories, a large military force inside the West Bank and a barrier of towering concrete slabs and electronic fencing along and inside the West Bank provide the first line of defense.

Guards are stationed not just at schools, but at many other public facilities, including bus and train stations, parking lots, malls and restaurants.

"There are other measures of prevention of an attack taking place, which are carried out 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all over the country," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Many are not for public knowledge.

Gun lobbyists who might think Israel hands out guns freely to keep its citizens safe might be less enamored of Israel's actual gun laws, which are much stricter than those in the U.S. For one thing, notes Yakov Amit, head of the firearms licensing department at the Ministry of Public Security, Israeli law does not guarantee the right to bear arms as the U.S. Constitution does.

"The policy in Israel is restrictive," he said.

Gun licensing to private citizens is limited largely to people who are deemed to need a firearm because they work or live in dangerous areas, Amit said. West Bank settlers, for instance, can apply for weapons licenses, as can residents of communities on the borders with Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Licensing requires multiple levels of screening, and permits must be renewed every three years. Renewal is not automatic.

The policy is designed "to strike a balance between needs and risks," Amit said. "We know that weapons are a dangerous thing, and in the hands of someone who isn't trained or isn't reliable, it causes problems."

The gap between Israeli gun ownership and U.S. gun ownership is consequently staggering. A total of 170,000 guns are licensed for private use in Israel, or about one gun for every 30 adults.

In addition to the privately held weapons, 130,000 guns are licensed to Israeli security companies, firing ranges, government ministries and companies that operate in areas deemed dangerous. Soldiers who carry assault rifles off base during their regular or reserves service turn them in when they complete their tours of duty.

By contrast, U.S. authorities estimate that at least one-third of all American households have firearms ? and in many cases, not only one.

Americans are also much freer to choose what type of guns they buy. Automatic weapons of the type Lanza used to gun down his victims are banned for private ownership in Israel. It is also rare for a person to be authorized to own more than one firearm, Amit said.

Eighty percent of the 10,000 people who apply yearly for licenses are turned down, he said. In the U.S., people can purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check or a license of any kind.

In Israel, applicants must undergo police screening and medical exams, in part to determine their mental state, Amit said.

Many Israelis receive weapons training in the military. But to be licensed to receive a weapon outside the military, they must undergo at least two hours of additional training, then repeat the training and medical exams every three years before they can renew their licenses.

Anybody who possesses a legally acquired gun waives the right to confidentiality, and authorities cross-reference for new information about the gunholder every three months.

"The point is not to complicate, but to make sure the system makes things safer," Amit said.

Don't be fooled by January pay -- higher taxes loom

6 hrs.

Workers probably won't feel the full brunt of next year's tax increases in their January paychecks, but don't be fooled by the temporary reprieve.?

No matter what Congress does to address the year-end fiscal cliff, it's already too late for employers to accurately withhold income taxes from January paychecks, unless all the current tax rates remain unchanged, which is an unlikely scenario.?

Social Security payroll taxes are set to increase on Jan. 1, so workers should immediately feel the squeeze of a 2 percent cut in their take-home pay. But as talks drag on over how to address other year-end tax increases, the Internal Revenue Service has delayed releasing income tax withholding tables for 2013.?

As a result, employers are planning to withhold income taxes at the 2012 rates, at least for the first one or two paychecks of the year, said Michael O'Toole of the American Payroll Association.?

If employers don't withhold enough taxes in January, they will have to withhold even more taxes later in the year to make up the difference. Otherwise, taxpayers could get hit with big tax bills, and possibly penalties, when they file their 2013 returns.?

The tax increases could be steep. If Congress fails to act, workers at every income level face significant tax increases next year as part of the year-end "fiscal cliff."?

A taxpayer making between $50,000 and $75,000 would get an average tax increase of $2,400, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $92 a paycheck, on average.?

Someone making between $75,000 and $100,000 would get a tax increase averaging nearly $3,700. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $142 a paycheck.?

O'Toole said it would take most employers two weeks to four weeks to update their payroll systems, once new tax withholding tables are released. For some small businesses, it could take longer.?

"Employers can't really just come up with withholding tables on their own, depending on what the rates are," O'Toole said. "The smaller companies that do not use a payroll processing service probably would have more problems than anyone else."?

On Friday, the IRS said it plans to issue guidance by the end the year, though it won't be early enough to affect paychecks in early January.?

"We are aware that employers have questions with respect to 2013 withholding," the agency said in a written statement. "Since Congress is still considering changes to the tax law, we continue to closely monitor the situation. We intend to issue guidance by the end of the year on appropriate withholding for 2013."?

About three-quarters of taxpayers got tax refunds this year, averaging $2,707, according to the IRS. That gives most taxpayers some leeway to manage their income tax withholding. However, many people rely on tax refunds to pay bills or make major purchases.?

"The reality is, the vast majority of Americans do live paycheck to paycheck and that tax refund is their most significant payday of the year," said Bob Meighan, vice president of TurboTax, an online tax preparation service.?

Most of the expiring tax breaks were first enacted under President George W. Bush and extended under President Barack Obama. Obama campaigned for re-election on extending the tax cuts on incomes below $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for married couples. Obama would let the tax cuts expire on incomes above those amounts.?

Boehner's offer
In negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner, Obama offered to raise the income threshold, limiting tax increases to those making more than $400,000. Boehner, who has argued for years that the tax cuts should be made permanent for everyone, responded by trying to push a bill through the House that would have let many of the tax cuts expire on incomes above $1 million.?

Many Republicans revolted and Boehner, R-Ohio, shelved the bill, sending lawmakers home for the Christmas holiday and leaving the outcome of talks in doubt as the new year approaches.?

If Congress and the White House cannot reach a deal, income tax rates would go up, estate taxes and investment taxes would increase and the alternative minimum tax would hit millions of middle-income people. A temporary payroll tax cut that has benefited nearly every wage earner in 2011 and 2012 expires, costing the average family an additional $1,000 a year by itself.?

In addition, dozens of other tax breaks for businesses and individuals that are routinely renewed each year already expired at the end of 2011. Congress was expected to renew many of them by January, so taxpayers could still claim them on their 2012 tax returns.?

If Congress doesn't act on those tax cuts, businesses would lose a popular tax credit for research and development as well as generous tax breaks for investing in new plants and equipment. Individuals would lose federal tax breaks for paying local sales taxes, buying energy efficient appliances and using mass transit.?

In all, taxes would go up by about $536 billion next year.?

Have Crohn's Disease? What To Eat at Holiday Parties

During the holiday season, many of us are invited to lots of parties and family dinners that offer a wide variety of tempting foods and beverages. But if you have the inflammatory bowel disease known as Crohn?s disease, it can be a challenge to find foods and drinks that don?t bother you. Here are a few suggestions and some of the latest findings from research as well.

Crohn?s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease in which the small intestine can be inflamed, although inflammation can occur anywhere in the intestine. Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and fever, and they can come (flares) and go (remission).

Not everyone who has Crohn?s disease is affected in the same way by the same foods, which makes it impossible to develop a one-size-fits-all dietary program. However, there are some food items that tend to cause more symptoms than others, and at the same time, foods that tend to not trigger symptoms. The severity of reaction to any one food can depend on whether a person is experiencing a flare or remission of the disease.

If you consider the foods in these two categories, and pay attention to how your body typically reacts to certain foods, then hopefully you will be better prepared to eat and drink your way through the holidays with a minimum of problems, even when it comes to holiday favorites. If you have been invited to a potluck or asked to bring along a food item to share, be sure to bring something you can eat, just in case the pickings are slim at the party!

  • Eggnog. Many people with Crohn?s disease are lactose intolerant so eggnog is off the menu because of the milk and cream. However, eggnog can be made with almond milk, frozen bananas, and nutmeg. Rum can be added if you can tolerate alcohol. To make a dairy-free eggnog, combine 2 cups almond milk, 1 frozen banana, and ? teaspoon ground nutmeg. Mix at high speed in a blender and enjoy.
  • Pasta dishes. Although whole-grain pasta is a healthier choice for most people, individuals with Crohn?s disease often tolerate refined grains better. If pasta dishes are offered, be sure to choose those that do not use a tomato-based or cheese-based sauce. Instead, look for those prepared with olive oil and herbs.
  • Vegetables: It?s best to bypass the raw vegetable platter and green salads and seek out cooked veggies that are easier on the digestive tract, such as sweet potatoes, various squashes, and roasted peppers.
  • Appetizers: Say ?no? to the bacon-wrapped goodies and the cocktail hotdogs (processed meats are generally a no-no) and look for fresh avocado slices, black olives, or baked bagel chips. Guacamole dip can be safe if it?s not spicy and made without tomatoes. Here?s a recipe you can bring with you: 3 avocados, one minced garlic clove, juice from one lime, ? cup minced onion, and finely chopped fresh cilantro (if desired). Mash the avocadoes, add the other ingredients, and serve with baked tortilla or bagel chips.
  • Snacks: Baked chips, pretzels, and dried fruits may be your safest bets. Avoid the nuts, greasy potato and tortilla chips, and dairy-based dips.
  • Dinner is served: Search out foods that are not fried or spicy, and look for vegetables that are cooked (no raw salads), except the cruciferous veggies (such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts). Non-fatty meats and fish, such as turkey, baked chicken, salmon, shrimp (not fried) and lean beef, may be good choices. Avoid cream sauces, spice dips, and gravies.

Recent research on Crohn?s disease and diet

Some people swear that probiotics are helpful in relieving symptoms of Crohn?s disease, although the literature has yet to fully support their use. In a recent study published in Current Gastroenterology Reports, researchers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center reported that ?although there are insufficient data to recommend probiotics in ulcerative colitis or Crohn?s disease, good evidence supports the use of specific probiotics for maintenance of remission in pouchitis,? which is a side effect of treatment for inflammatory bowel disease.

An interesting study that will appear in the January 2013 issue of Current Gastroenterology Reports notes that despite continuous efforts, ?the effect of diet on established disease [Crohn?s disease] remains poorly studied,? and that ?vitamin D supplementation may prevent relapse of disease.? Therefore it may be wise to evaluate your vitamin D intake (from sunlight, food, and supplements). The Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamin D is 600 International Units for adults up to age 70 and then 800 IU thereafter, according to the National Institutes of Health.

In fact, lower levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk of Crohn?s disease, while taking supplements of the nutrient may help prevent relapse of the disease. If you are using oral contraceptives, hormone replacement, aspirin, antibiotics, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, they may increase your risk of developing Crohn?s disease.

If you have Crohn?s disease, eating and drinking your way through the holiday season may present a challenge, but you can take steps to prevent flares or problems with the disease. To be on the safe side, you may want to bring a dish you have prepared that will allow you to participate in the festivities of holiday parties and reduce the chance you will experience any symptoms of Crohn?s disease.

Study shows rapid warming on the West Antarctic ice sheet

Dec. 23, 2012 ? In a discovery that raises further concerns about the future contribution of Antarctica to sea level rise, a new study finds that the western part of the ice sheet is experiencing nearly twice as much warming as previously thought.

The temperature record from Byrd Station, a scientific outpost in the center of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), demonstrates a marked increase of 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit (2.4 degrees Celsius) in average annual temperature since 1958 -- that is, three times faster than the average temperature rise around the globe.

This temperature increase is nearly double what previous research has suggested, and reveals -- for the first time -- warming trends during the summer months of the Southern Hemisphere (December through February), said David Bromwich, professor of geography at Ohio State University and senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center.

The findings were published online this week in the journal Nature Geoscience.

"Our record suggests that continued summer warming in West Antarctica could upset the surface mass balance of the ice sheet, so that the region could make an even bigger contribution to sea level rise than it already does," said Bromwich.

"Even without generating significant mass loss directly, surface melting on the WAIS could contribute to sea level indirectly, by weakening the West Antarctic ice shelves that restrain the region's natural ice flow into the ocean."

Andrew Monaghan, study co-author and scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), said that these findings place West Antarctica among the fastest-warming regions on Earth.

"We've already seen enhanced surface melting contribute to the breakup of the Antarctic's Larsen B Ice Shelf, where glaciers at the edge discharged massive sections of ice into the ocean that contributed to sea level rise," Monaghan said. "The stakes would be much higher if a similar event occurred to an ice shelf restraining one of the enormous WAIS glaciers."

Researchers consider the WAIS especially sensitive to climate change, explained Ohio State University doctoral student Julien Nicolas. Since the base of the ice sheet rests below sea level, it is vulnerable to direct contact with warm ocean water. Its melting currently contributes 0.3 mm to sea level rise each year -- second to Greenland, whose contribution to sea level rise has been estimated as high as 0.7 mm per year.

Due to its location some 700 miles from the South Pole and near the center of the WAIS, Byrd Station is an important indicator of climate change throughout the region.

In the past, researchers haven't been able to make much use of the Byrd Station measurements because the data was incomplete; nearly one third of the temperature observations were missing for the time period of the study. Since its establishment in 1957, the station hasn't always been occupied. A year-round automated station was installed in 1980, but it has experienced frequent power outages, especially during the long polar night, when its solar panels can't recharge.

Bromwich and two of his graduate students, along with colleagues from NCAR and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, corrected the past Byrd temperature measurements and used corrected data from a computer atmospheric model and a numerical analysis method to fill in the missing observations.

Aside from offering a more complete picture of warming in West Antarctica, the study suggests that if this warming trend continues, melting will become more extensive in the region in the future, Bromwich said.

While the researchers work to fully understand the cause of the summer warming at Byrd Station, the next step is clear, he added.

"West Antarctica is one of the most rapidly changing regions on Earth, but it is also one of the least known," he said. "Our study underscores the need for a reliable network of meteorological observations throughout West Antarctica, so that we can know what is happening -- and why -- with more certainty."

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.
