Netflix announces super HD and 3D streaming | canada.com

U.S. Netflix subscribers will now be able to access super HD 1080p content that features higher quality video than Netflix?s regular HD offerings. Streaming 3D video is also coming to the service, but will only be U.S exclusive.

It seems that Canada?s ?almost Third World access to the internet? might hold some of these features back, especially 3D video streaming if it ever makes its way to Canada. Super HD requires an internet connection of at least 6 MB per second and it will use 2.7 GBs of bandwidth per hour. 3D content requires a constant connection of seven MB and will destroy 5 GB of data in only an hour. Both of these figures amount to a significant amount of data usage in a relatively short period of time and this isn?t exactly ideal in Canada?s internet landscape.

For American Netflix subscribers this won?t be an issue though, as most U.S. internet providers all for hundreds of GBs of bandwidth per month. In Canada, this is an entirely different issue. Getting higher bandwidth caps can cost a significant amount of money. Then there?s also the controversy surrounding Teksavvy subscriber lawsuits. Teksavvy is one of Canada?s largest third-party internet providers and offers relatively large data usage caps.

Not all internet providers support Super HD though and they also need to be part of Netflix?s Open Connect Network. Click on this link to find out if yours does. If you have a ton of bandwidth though, investing in a way to access American Netflix content in Canada seems like an even more appealing option right now, especially if you?re interested in streaming 3D movies.
