Arts & Music Festival Sunday

In its continued effort to provide local residents with more entertainment opportunities, the City of Rohnert Park combined two popular events from last year and is introducing the Arts and Music Festival on Sunday, Aug. 28.

The city is combining last year?s Summer Arts Bizarre and the Rock and Blues Festival and turning them into one big event, said event?s planner Donna Abeln. The plan is to make the Arts and Music Festival an annual event, eventually offering two days of entertainment.

?We?re trying to do more special events so people have something to do on the weekends in Rohnert Park without going out of town,? said Abeln. ?We wanted to do something affordable and free.?

Adding entertainment opportunities such as this festival?in addition to the farmers market Party on the Plaza, the Spooktacular in October and more events included in the annual entertainment lineup?provides local residents with local delights so they don?t have to travel out of town to find similar events.

?Everybody else has one; why not us?? said Abeln about next weekend?s festival. And with the Community Center Complex being conveniently located next to bike paths, it is hoped people will go green and ride their bicycles or walk to the event.

The festival will feature live music on the lawn at the Community Center Complex, as well as food vendors, beer and wine, a children?s area with jump houses, rock climbing walls and a train. There will be magicians performing, crafters and artists, and a variety of music.

At the event?s art show running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., you?ll find dozens of crafters selling quilts, ceramics, jewelry, gourds and several artists from Sonoma County and beyond. Local guitarist Nate Lopez will be playing between band sessions.

Running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., crowds will be entertained by the following lineup of bands:

11 ? 11:45 a.m.: The Blues Burners
12:05 ? 12:50 p.m.: The Mad Maggies
1:10 ? 2:05 p.m.: Midnight Sun Massive
2:25 ? 3:20 p.m.: Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs
3:40 ? 5:10 p.m.: The Soulshine Bluesband
5:30 ? 7:00 p.m.: Araan Harris and the Farm Band

Event admission is free. Wednesday, Aug. 24, is the deadline for crafters and artists to apply for a vendor?s booth. Visit www.rpartsandmusicfest.org, or call 588-3456 for more information.
