Promoting Ireland's food and drink industry : Mairead McGuinness

?? Irish MEPs hosted a special reception to celebrate St Patrick?s Day at the European Parliament yesterday (March 20th).

?Some of the best of Irish produce was showcased at the event on behalf of Food and Drink Industry Ireland and Diageo Ireland. Our guests enjoyed some delicious samples of Irish salmon, meats, cheeses, breads and beverages,? Mairead McGuinness MEP commented.

?The European market is vital for Ireland?s food and drink industry. 41% of indigenous food exports go to the UK with 34% directed to the rest of Europe. The strong international demand for Ireland?s high-quality produce is clearly reflected by the record growth of Ireland?s export of these goods, which almost reached ?9 billion in 2011.

?Opportunities such as the Parliament reception are important for the promotion of Irish goods. By supporting our Irish producers and exporters, we are helping to sustain the 230,000 jobs linked to the agri-food sector which has a turnover of ?24 billion.?

The lunchtime reception was attended by European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science M?ire Geoghegan-Quinn, the Irish Ambassador to Belgium Eamonn Mac Aodha, MEPs and Irish personnel working across the EU institutions and private sector in Brussels as well as guests representing the wider European Union.
