Man admits stealing IDs to rig Cal State election

(AP) ? A 22-year-old man has admitted stealing the identities and passwords of more than 700 fellow students at his San Diego-area university so he could rig campus elections.

The North County Times reports (http://bit.ly/15xHorc) former Cal State San Marcos student Matthew Weaver of Huntington Beach pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to wire fraud, access device fraud and unauthorized use of a computer.

In March 2012, Weaver was one of two candidates to be the university's student council president.

Court documents say he used a small electronic device that records a computer user's keystrokes to steal 745 student passwords.

Weaver admitted casting about 480 votes for himself and for friends who also were on the ballot.

He could get between 27 and 33 months in prison when he's sentenced June 17.
