Kitchen Improvements | Do it Your Self

Kitchen improvements are some of the most common ways to change a house. This is partly because it is a room that most of us use three times a day and it gets worn out as well as the fact that fashions change and it can be good to have an up to date look and new appliances.

The problem with updating a kitchen is that it is expensive. Changing most rooms will probably just mean a coat of paint and some soft furnishings but the kitchen will need improvements made to the units, work surfaces, white goods and walls as well as possible the furniture and flooring as well. This can add up very quickly.

It is therefore a really good idea to work out how you can make improvements that will last. This means making sure that you are happy with the look and the layout of the kitchen. It can be worth going for a more classic look rather than a modern one. This is because very modern designs tend to go out of fashion quickly, whereas a more classical style will last a long time. You can always paint walls quite cheaply but changing the whole look will cost a lot of money and unless you have a lot of money, you will not be able to afford to keep doing it.

It is worth setting a budget before you start planning the work. This way you will only look at the designs that you can afford, rather than getting your heart set on something very expensive and then being disappointed when you cannot afford it. Also get a selection of quotes for the work as that will allow you to discuss what you have in mind with several people and better think through your ideas as well as being able to compare costs.

Consider the layout of the kitchen and think about how you use the space. You are the best person to judge what the best layout will be and so you need to think about that. A kitchen designer may help, but they do not have to use the space so do not know whether you spend most time at the cooker or sink, whether you want to see out of the window while washing up or while sitting at the table etc.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Six years of bank feeds | Xero Accounting Software

Lucy reconciles bank transactions in our new home page video

On the 28 September 2006, we met with New Zealand?s ASB Bank and pitched the concept of supplying bank transaction data into Xero?s online accounting software. Just a month later, on the 31st October, the very first feed file arrived from ASB overnight, and bank feeds were born.

That was six years ago. We were the first cloud accounting software to link data from banks to an accounting package where the business owner and not just the accountant ?could see their bank activity. The feature was a hit ? customers could login to Xero, reconcile their transactions and immediately update their financial records to match the activity in their bank account.

The idea for bank feeds came out of our design-led approach. We followed small businesses around and quickly learned that the first business task they do is to check their online bank account to see who paid them overnight.?But at the time, business owners didn?t process their accounting transactions there and then; they had to come back later to do the bookkeeping. Bank feeds made bank reconciliation a natural starting point for daily workflow ? one of the few substantial small business process changes in many years. Daily reconciliation eliminates catch up work and lets business owners have a real time view of their numbers.

A year later, Xero?s bank feeds service was extended to Kiwibank, ANZ, and the National Bank (ANZ and National Bank of course completed their merger earlier this week), and then BNZ, Westpac and TSB. A year after that, in 2008, we had our first feed from ANZ in Australia.

We?re quite pleased that bank feeds have become a basic prerequisite for all accounting software.

Xero now has direct relationships with all of the major banks in New Zealand, and direct relationships with most of the major banks in Australia, and we are continuing to develop and build these relationships on an ongoing basis. If you?re in New Zealand or Australia and hold a small business bank account ? chances are that your bank supplies feeds to us directly. In order to receive one of these feeds, all you need to do is complete an application form and send it in, and we take care of the rest. The bank securely and directly transfers data to us on a nightly basis.

The full list of the financial institutions that partner with us is available in our Help Centre. If you?re setting up a new account for your small business, we encourage you to use one of our listed partners.

Yodlee, the USA and the UK

In 2009 we recognized the need to reach the thousands of banks in the United States in a way that didn?t require us to form relationships with each and every institution individually. Yodlee has been doing account aggregation for over a decade and are the best in class at what they do. Yodlee believes that bank account data belongs to the customer (?your account, your data?) and when a bank fails to make a customer?s data accessible, Yodlee provides a way for that customer to get their data into the systems they want to use.

Our Yodlee integration gave us a way to provide our US and UK customers feeds when financial institutions were too slow or too technologically constrained to supply the data to us directly. Yodlee is well established in the US ? so much so that 8 out of the top 10 US financial institutions use Yodlee for their own aggregation purposes. What Yodlee has found is that by opening up the data within those financial institutions ? something the institutions in the US and UK market have been reluctant to do ? they have enabled a huge amount of innovation across the financial services sector ? with over 600 financial institutions and companies using their platform for a massive variety of services: credit-worthiness reporting, debt management, personal financial management, credit-card charge monitoring, account-ownership verification, and of course, small business accounting too.

Yodlee has faced criticism for?some of its methods ? you need to supply your online banking credentials to use its services ? but this is a product of a lack of innovation in the financial institutions that have failed to provide viable alternatives. Yodlee takes security very seriously and has not yet had a security incident. They are a PCI Level 1 Service Provider which is a bank-grade level of security.

Yodlee is completely optional and is provided to Xero subscribers free of charge. You can choose to stick with manually uploading bank transactions if you do not wish to use it. It?s worth noting that other aggregation methods, such as those provided in the US by accounting giant Intuit or FiServ?s CashEdge, work in exactly the same way. It looks to us like the market has spoken and that aggregation services are now a core component of the industry.

Ideally the banking sector would provide direct methods for us to provide the functionality that our customers want, and when they do so, we will migrate to them. ?In fact, we are actively working with financial institutions in all markets, and with Yodlee, to evolve alternate methods which eliminate the need to ask for customer credentials.

We were possibly the first to use an aggregation service like Yodlee with small business accounting software, but Yodlee had been used for years with personal financial management products like Mint, and Yodlee feeds will soon be available for Xero Personal too.

Bank Feeds Today

Bank feeds have grown so much within Xero that on a weekly basis we now process over 1.5 million statement lines and generate over 700,000 statements for the 111,000 small businesses using our software. Bank feeds has grown into a significant part of Xero?s business, with three full-time development staff and a dedicated customer support team. Despite the simplicity of the concept (data gets delivered to Xero, Xero delivers data to customer), there is a tremendous amount of complexity under the hood in the variety of ways in which banks supply data to us, and the formats and frequency with which they do so, and all of the queuing, scheduling, processing and parsing that happens every time a file is received or a feed is refreshed. The bank feeds development team do some of the most challenging work in the company.

The Next Six Years

Our direct partnerships with banks have been tremendously successful ? for both ourselves and for our partnering financial institutions ? and we are in constant conversation with the banks that we work with about how to increase the amount of benefit for our shared customers. Bank feeds are just the start. We believe financial institutions are in a tremendously powerful position to improve the lives of small businesses, and when they partner with us they can start to unlock a lot of small business potential that would otherwise lay dormant.

Ideally we?d like to see all banks offer feeds as a direct service. This might include a standard way for account owners to provision feeds for any product, including Xero. It might include the ability for account owners to provide read only feeds to other stakeholders, as it seems crazy, for example, that boards of not for profit organizations can?t get a summary of bank transactions for the entities they are responsible for. And finally, it might include OAuth style access to bank feeds services which would provide a way for banks and customers to control access to their accounts without providing credentials or completing paper forms.

We?ve been thinking about this stuff for a long time, and it was great to see a lot of these concepts explored by speakers at Money2020 in Las Vegas last week. ?We look forward to discussing some of these ideas with financial institutions soon, and I?m sure we?ll get to see most of these ideas put into practice over the next six years.

Historic Homes in Tokyo Attract More ... - Real Estate Japan

Tokyo architect Toshiko Kinoshita was forced to buy a classic postwar Japanese home in her neighborhood that was bought by a developer and was facing a demolition. In order to save it, she bought it herself. Since the property was too big for her to live in, she decided to sell it to an international buyer.

Today, Japanese buyers tend to choose modern homes, making the market for traditional houses to move slow. Historic homes in Japan that is anything more than 40 years old can be found in central Tokyo. When it comes to pricing, the value of any property in Tokyo is based largely on how much the land is worth while the value of a house that sits on any property depreciates as soon as someone inhabits it.

Kinoshita?s decision to preserve the architectural and historical value of the property she bought is still seen by many as a rare one. According to Ken Arbour, president of Century 21 SKY Realty, anyone in Japan that is planning to buy a house that is as old as 30 years is most likely to take it apart and start building a new one.

Kinoshita, with her husband and fellow architect, Juan Ordonez, decided to come up with an unusual preservation tactic. Together, they organized a temporary exhibition gallery in Denenchofu, in southwest Tokyo. They aim to feature three properties and match them with buyers who are like them, who appreciate history, culture and architecture.

The said houses included in the exhibition were designed by architects Isoya Yosihda, Junzo Yoshimura and Kunio Maekawa. The first house which is also the smallest, measures 2,142 square feet. It was built in 1955 by Yoshida, who was also the architect of the Kabukiza theater in Ginza. There is no list price for the house, but the market value of the land is estimated at 300-350 million yen.

The second house was also built in 1955 for concert pianist, Takahiro Sonoda by Junzo Yoshimura and is 3,295 square feet in size. The third property called the Maekawa house, is the one currently owned by architect Kinoshita. It was built in 1974 by Kunio Maekawa, who was also the designer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The house measures 4,908 square feet, with a guide price of about $6.3 million. Unfortunately, the exhibition ended without a sale. But the owners said that it could still raise awareness of the difficulty of preserving important Japanese architecture.

Meanwhile outside of Tokyo, there are reports of a larger inventory of traditional homes particularly in Kyoto and Kamakura. In fact, Sotheby?s International realty is offering to sell two traditional houses in Kyoto, which is more than 50 years old and in Kamakura, which was built in 1972. Foreigners tend to have greater appreciation of old and traditional Japanese properties and are, most of the time, more educated about Japanese architecture and landscape design than the Japanese, which could be one of the reasons why there are more foreign buyers coming in for these properties, according to Yukiko Takano of Sotheby?s Tokyo office.

Jacob Reiner, an American developer and founder and chief architect of Eden Homes buys and repairs neglected houses for international buyers. He refurbishes tradition houses in Shojiko, and the lakeside village, one of the few remaining undeveloped areas near Mount Fuji.

According to him, by working with buyers to revamp these old houses according to their budget and taste, is one of the ways to encourage them to recreate a culture of reform in Japan and change the general notion that ?old is no good.?

MINNEAPOLIS Children with migraine are more likely to have below average school performance than kids who do not have headaches, according to new research published in the October 30, 2012, print issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study of 5,671 Brazilian children ages 5 to 12 found that those with migraine were 30 percent more likely to have below average school performance than those with no headaches.

"Studies have looked at the burden of migraine for adolescents, but less work has been done to determine the effect of migraine on younger children," said study author Marcelo E. Bigal, MD, PhD, of Merck & Co. in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.

For the study, the students' teachers provided information on students' performance that was the same information provided to educational boards. Teachers also completed a validated questionnaire screening for emotional and behavioral problems and interviewed parents with a questionnaire covering medical history, headaches and other information.

The study found that 0.6 percent of the children had chronic migraine, or migraine on 15 or more days per month, 9 percent had episodic migraine, and 17.6 percent had probable migraine, which meant they met all but one of the criteria for migraine and did not meet the full criteria for any other type of headache syndrome.

The link between migraine and poor performance in school was even stronger for children with migraines that were more severe, lasted longer, or for children with chronic migraine, as well as for those who also had emotional or behavioral problems.

"With approximately one-fourth of school-age children having headaches with migraine features, this is a serious problem, especially for those with frequent, severe attacks that do not subside quickly," Bigal said. "Parents and teachers need to take these headaches seriously and make sure children get appropriate medical attention and treatment."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has spent months trying to balance his re-election bid with running the government.

Now, just when his campaign needs him the most, with little more than a week before the election, his official job is beckoning.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney, too, faces questions about how to conduct his campaign as a superstorm charges toward the East Coast. But as president, it's Obama who oversees the federal government's preparations for the looming storm and it's Obama who will bear the responsibility for any missteps.

With that in mind, Obama scrapped some campaign events for Monday, as well as Tuesday morning. He planned to return to the White House Monday afternoon to monitor the storm and the government's response.

"My first priority has to be making sure that everything is in place" to help those affected by the storm, Obama told campaign workers in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday night. He said the storm meant he would "not be able to campaign quite as much over the next few days."

Still, ripping up Obama's strategically planned travel schedule was something his Chicago-based campaign was loath to do unless absolutely necessary.

In the tight race, the candidates have few opportunities left to blitz through the most competitive states, trying to build momentum and make a final pitch to undecided voters.

The president's handling of the storm could sway those late-breaking voters. If Obama is perceived as a strong leader who shows command in a crisis, some undecided voters may be compelled to back the president. But a botched response or a sense that he's putting politics over public safety could weaken his support at a point in the race where there's little chance to reverse course.

"I think that the president of the United States is the commander in chief. The American people look to him, and I'm sure he will conduct himself and play his leadership role in a fine fashion. So I would imagine that might help him a little bit," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

"But I'm not sure it will affect votes. People have been exposed to this very long campaign," he said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Obama advisers say they've learned the lessons from President George W. Bush's widely criticized response to Hurricane Katrina. Bush was seen as ineffective and out of touch, and his presidency never recovered.

That's why Obama's team has moved quickly throughout the year to avoid the impression that the president was shirking his responsibilities, even as the campaign ramped up.

When separate crises struck Colorado this summer ? destructive wildfires and a mass shooting at a movie theater ? Obama hastily arranged trips to meet with victims and their families. When a hurricane barreled through the Gulf Coast ahead of the Democratic Convention, the president added a stop in New Orleans to his preconvention itinerary.

But those decisions were far easier than what's facing Obama's team. Back then, there was time to add or reschedule trips. Now, with just nine days until Election Day, time is a precious commodity and canceling trips may mean never having the chance to make them up.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to hit the East Coast late Monday, then combine with two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid superstorm. At least four battleground states are likely to be hit: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama plans to spend every day between now and Nov. 6 on the road in most of those states and others, though his schedule does call for him to be back in Washington some nights.

In canceling Obama's event Monday in Virginia, aides also considered the optics of urging thousands of people to venture out to a political rally in the midst of a raging storm.

Still, it was clear Obama's team was working hard to ensure that the president could keep campaigning as long as possible before he was needed back in Washington.

His departure for Florida, where he'll hold an event with Bill Clinton, was moved up from Monday morning to Sunday night to ensure Obama made it to the Orlando area. But the campaign canceled appearances at two other events, in Virginia and Ohio. Vice President Joe Biden will join Clinton at the Ohio rally.

Obama was scheduled to campaign Tuesday evening in Wisconsin, though that too was in flux.

Romney canceled three events in Virginia on Sunday and planned to spend the day campaigning with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio.

If bad weather keeps people in hard-hit battleground states from going to the polls, it could mess up the campaigns' carefully crafted get-out-the-vote efforts.

Jennifer Psaki, Obama's campaign spokeswoman, said the Democratic ticket was urging people to vote early when they can, especially if it helps them get to the polls before the storm.

"Safety comes first," she said. "And that's the case with early voting as well."

First Lady Dianne Bentley: Alabama School of Fine Arts

?

First Lady Dianne Bentley visited the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham last week to learn more about the programs that they offer to students. She was impressed with their innovative learning styles and all of the arts available. She got to listen to their choral department sing, got to view the labs in their math and science department, and got to stand in on the dance classes. She also got to speak with students in the creative writing department as they critiqued each other's latest short story. The visual arts students have their own workspace where they?create pieces for their senior portfolio and gallery. Their art decorates not only this studio but the halls throughout the school. The final stop was in the new theater where students were rehearsing the final curtain call for their upcoming play. The theater allows students to get experience before entering the work world and gives them credits for their acting card.

?

This public school has spots for three hundred and fifty students. They have places for students to dorm and have students that just come for the day. Every student who enters the doors of this school is uniquely talented and so are the professors that teach them. This is another great treasure we have in the state of Alabama.

Increased risk for breast cancer death among black women greatest ...

SAN DIEGO ? Non-Hispanic black women diagnosed with breast cancer, specifically those with estrogen receptor-positive tumors, are at a significantly increased risk for breast cancer death compared with non-Hispanic white women.

"This difference was greatest in the first three years after diagnosis," said Erica Warner, M.P.H., Sc.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass., who presented the data at the Fifth AACR Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities, held here Oct. 27-30, 2012.

Prior research has shown that non-Hispanic black women have lower breast cancer survival rates relative to other racial/ethnic groups.

Warner and colleagues conducted a study of 19,480 women who presented to National Comprehensive Cancer Network centers with stage 1 to stage 3 breast cancer between January 2000 and December 2007. They compared breast cancer-specific mortality among 634 Asian women, 1,291 Hispanic women, 1,500 non-Hispanic black women and 16,055 non-Hispanic white women.

After a median follow-up of 6.9 years, the researchers found that non-Hispanic black women had a 48 percent higher risk for breast cancer death in the first three years after diagnosis compared with non-Hispanic white women. After three years, non-Hispanic black women had a 34 percent increased risk for breast cancer-specific mortality.

"The higher risk for early death among black women was more striking among women with estrogen receptor-positive tumors," Warner said.

Non-Hispanic black women with estrogen receptor-positive tumors were more than twice as likely to die from breast cancer within the first three years of diagnosis compared with non-Hispanic white women. This risk was also increased in non-Hispanic black women with luminal A and luminal B breast cancer subtypes.

"This finding is important because these are the types of tumors that we traditionally think of as more treatable," Warner said.

No difference in breast cancer mortality between non-Hispanic black and white women was found for estrogen receptor-negative, basal or HER2-overexpressing tumor subtypes.

Warner and colleagues also evaluated breast cancer survival among Asian and Hispanic women. Compared with non-Hispanic white women, data indicated that Asian women had a 40 percent lower risk for breast cancer death. The researchers observed this decreased risk in all breast cancers and in estrogen receptor-negative, luminal A and HER2-overexpressing tumors. They found no significant differences between non-Hispanic white women and Hispanic women for breast cancer mortality.

"The results of this study emphasize that clinical management and follow-up for patients with breast cancer, particularly black women, is important in the first few years after diagnosis," Warner said. "Although the difference between blacks and whites was highest for this time period, the risk for death was highest in the first few years after diagnosis for all groups."

Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.

1 in 10 Canadians will benefit from improved diagnosis and treatment

Canadian scientists have determined that routine electrocardiogram (ECG) results for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) the most common form of irregular heart beat can help doctors identify those at higher risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including death. This knowledge will help doctors improve the treatment and prognosis of atrial fibrillation.

Through a retrospective analysis of thousands of patient files, researchers at the Montreal Heart Institute and the University of Calgary learned that a routine 12-lead surface ECG in which 12 different electrical signals are recorded conducted at the time of AF diagnosis is an accurate predictor of later adverse events.

Research presented today at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress found that patients with AF do not all face the same risks for disease; determining the extent to which any individual patient is at risk of adverse events has been a challenge for doctors, until now.

"The ECG has recently received resurging attention due to its simplicity, relatively cheap cost and near universal availability," says Dr. Jason Andrade, cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute. "This knowledge, combined with the recognition that all patients with AF will receive an ECG as part of their diagnostic work-up, makes it highly useful as a method for assessing risk."

ECG is used to measure the rate and regularity of heartbeats, as well as the size and position of the chambers, the presence of any damage to the heart and the effects of drugs or devices used to regulate the heart, such as a pacemaker

Researchers found that the strongest indicators of risk were prolonged QRS duration and prolonged PR and QT intervals, each of which is a measure of electrical waves that regulate heart rhythm.

For example, a prolonged QRS duration is associated with an increased risk of multiple adverse cardiovascular outcomes including death and hospitalization.

An increased PR interval is associated with cardiovascular death and sudden cardiac death. A prolonged corrected QT interval is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular hospitalization and sudden arrhythmic death in men.

Dr. Andrade noted that the research team was "somewhat surprised at the strength of the relationship between the identified ECG predictors and the adverse cardiovascular outcomes."

Their data analysis showed that a prolonged QRS duration was associated with a 40 per cent increased risk for all-cause mortality, a 50 to 60 per cent increased risk for cardiovascular mortality and a 90 to 120 per cent increased risk for sudden cardiac death.

It is estimated that 350,000 Canadians live with AF, and that rate is likely climbing as the population ages. Those with AF are three to five times more likely to suffer a stroke, the majority of which are disabling and are more likely to be fatal. However, prevention is effective at reducing the risks associated with AF.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), a type of irregular heart rhythm known as an arrhythmia, can cause the heart to beat very fast, sometimes more than 150 beats per minute. While it is rare in people under 40, its prevalence increases with age.

"Knowing that the risk of developing AF increases with age and with other risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure and underlying heart disease, it is important to take action by following a healthy lifestyle to start reducing your risk," says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson. "Your risk for developing many diseases can be reduced if your diet is lower in sodium, saturated and trans fats and includes plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole grains."

She says that if you have a tendency to high blood pressure which is associated with AF then regular activity, watching salt in your diet and maintaining a healthy body weight are especially important preventive measures.

Dr. Abramson also recommends being tobacco-free, limiting alcohol intake and reducing stress as much as possible. "Any lifestyle changes that lower blood pressure may reduce your chances of developing AF," she adds.

Shas? solution to the party?s leadership crisis, the forum of three, has earned an envious spot in the weekly chareidi newspapers and magazines in Eretz Yisrael. Shas? own Yom L?Yom does not play modest, allocating significant real estate to tell the story and share the success, including the array of rabbonim whose photo appears alongside their bracha on the success achieved by Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita. The paper actually explains in depth that the credit for saving the party goes to Maran?s youngest son, HaGaon HaRav David Yosef, who heads the gadol hador?s Badatz Beit Yosef.

Rav Moshe?s efforts paid off big time in this case, at least for the time being, and the rabbonim who appear in the party-affiliated newspaper are not just Sephardim but prominent Ashkenazim including the Sanzer Rebbe Shlita, the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yonah Yechiel Metzger.

The Shas success begs the question if the Ashkenazim can achieve the same success, but with growing splits in the litvish and chassidic factions, such a reality appears unlikely at the present time.

Netanyahu's hard-right alliance could backfire in ballot

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's tie-up with far-right coalition partner Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman could backfire by eroding their lead ahead of Israel's January 22 ballot, a poll said on Friday.

The findings flew in the face of Netanyahu's prediction that, by merging with his fiery rival for nationalist votes, he would muster a "big, cohesive force" of support to win a third term as premier.

They also suggested that opposition parties, long dawdling thanks to Israel's stable economy and disillusionment with the deadlocked Palestinian peace process, would be reenergized by the conservative incumbent's tack toward the Lieberman tent.

According to a survey published by top-rated television station Channel Two, the joint candidate list of Netanyahu's Likud and Lieberman's Israel Beiteinu parties, announced on Thursday, would take just 33 of the 120 seats in parliament.

Though that still puts them ahead of rival parties, it represented a drop-off from Monday, before the unexpected alliance was unveiled, when a poll for parliament's television station Knesset 99 gave them a combined 39 seats.

"Unifying lists usually shrinks them," commented Nahum Barnea of the biggest-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

"Anyone who did not tolerate Lieberman and voted for Netanyahu will think twice, and the same is true for those who did not tolerate Netanyahu and voted for Lieberman."

Friday's poll also found boosted support for Israel's strongest opposition parties, left-leaning Labor and the new, centrist Yesh Atid. They were seen taking 27 and 18 seats, respectively, up from the 19 and 15 predicted on Monday.

"WE'LL LEAD FOR YEARS"

Reasons analysts gave for that shift included worry among wavering Israelis about the rise of the Soviet-born Lieberman, an often undiplomatic diplomat who faces possible indictment on graft charges - though he denies wrongdoing.

His party has questioned the loyalty of Israel's Arab minority and promoted legislation that critics denounced as an undemocratic targeting of liberal causes, such as a move to slap a 45 percent tax on foreign donations to human rights groups.

"The strong Russian accent, the police probes and the old left's fear of the man who doesn't believe in peace painted him in one stripe," said Netanyahu ex-spokesman Yoaz Hendel, adding that he believed much of the public had misjudged Lieberman.

The foreign minister brushed off Friday's poll, telling reporters Israel Beiteinu's own surveys anticipated it would win 16 seats in the next Knesset - up from today's 15.

"We are setting up the broad-based, traditional, historic nationalist camp that will lead the country for many years," he said. A Likud spokeswoman declined to comment on poll figures.

Netanyahu and Lieberman said their partnership will ditch some of the fractious small-party wrangling typical of Israeli politics and help the country attend to security challenges like Iran's nuclear program, as well as domestic problems.

The secularist Lieberman is also pushing to end en masse exemptions granted to Israeli Arabs and ultra-Orthodox Jews from compulsory national service.

While Channel Two projected an even 60-60 seat split between coalition and opposition in the next parliament, most commentators agreed that the latter were unlikely to build on that strength by uniting to offset the Netanyahu-Lieberman list.

"There is no agreed-upon (opposition) leader and no consensus, and almost no union seems possible there," wrote Shalom Yerushalmi of Maariv daily.
