Dorjee Khandu Memorial Tournament in Arunachal Concludes ...

Chief Minister Nabam Tuki reiterated his commitment to make Arunachal Pradesh a vibrant leading edge state in sports through target oriented action plans.??Our main vision is to make Arunachal Pradesh a vibrant leading edge state in sports through target oriented action plans for diverse activities including coaching, training, counseling and participation at various levels of tournaments and championships of all sports disciplines,? Tuki said on the concluding ceremony of the first Dorjee Khandu Memorial State Open Badminton Tournament here this evening.

?My government has recently adopted a comprehensive State Sports Policy, which would provide adequate incentives to sportspersons and boost sporting events. The pragmatic and uniform Sports Policy will broad base sports activities in the state so that people from different parts of the society get a fair chance to show their talent at all levels,? the Chief Minister said.?Tuki hoped that by the year 2030 all basic pre-requisite needs of infrastructure and necessary technical back-up for development of sports and youth activities will be fulfilled in all districts, sub-divisions and block headquarters. ?Besides creation of infrastructure and technical back-up, we will also provide maximum opportunities and benefits to indigenous youths, he said adding that ?a pension scheme for welfare of distressed sports persons has also been incorporated while special focus would be laid on promotion of sports amongst girls and the physically challenged.

Congratulating all the participants, including those who could not win a medal, Tuki said that winning or losing are secondary. The will to participate and emerge a formidable competitor also deserves appreciation, he said.?Tuki who himself is an ardent lover of sports said that Badminton is a wonderful game of stamina, zest and intelligence. Besides offering entertainment, recreation and physical exercise sports imbibes in us the important human qualities like discipline and team work, he said.

Recalling former Chief Minister Late Dorjee Khandu?s love for the game, Tuki said the former visionary leader played it with his heart and contributed to its development with his heart. Inside the court he was one of the most agile players that I have seen and outside he did all that was possible for upliftment of the game as well as young players. I can bet that many players here today have excelled due to his constant encouragement and guidance, Tuki said.

This tournament in his memorial is indeed a befitting tribute to the great ambassador of the game, he added. Tuki also declared that from next year the State Government will take over the tournament and facilitate its conduction through the Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA). He also assured to place sufficient funds for construction of one more badminton club with at least two courts. This will pave way to smooth conduction of the tournament as well as provide additional courts for our players to hone their skill.?The CM also felt proud of the recent performance of sportspersons in the state.

?They have carved their niche in sporting arenas like weightlifting, mountaineering, karate, archery, taekwondo, chess and even badminton, etc. We are proud of them for bringing laurels to the state and making Arunachal Pradesh an emerging sporting state to reckon with in the country.?Keeping in mind the future of the state?s sporting talents, the state government has increased reservation of jobs under sports quota in the state police and sports department from 5% to 10 %. ?Further, enough funds have been sanctioned for development of sports infrastructure as well as holding of sporting activities at Panchayat levels all over the state, he informed. We are also planning to construct indoor and outdoor stadiums at various locations in the state, he added..

On the occasion, upcoming badminton player of the state Laa Talar was felicitated with citation acknowledging the contribution of the young player towards the game of Badminton.?He was ranked 1 and 2 in Under-10, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-16 in Doubles and Singles respectively. In 2011 he became the Under-16 National Champion in Boys Single event. He has so far won 22 Gold, 6 Silver and 12 Bronze medals in various, International, National, Regional and State Level tournaments.?He represented India in the LI-NING Singapore Youth International Tournament held in Malaysia in December 2011. He also represented India in ANA Badminton Asia Youth U-17 and U-15 Championship 2011 at Chiba in Japan (5-9 October, 2011) and the East Java Badminton Open Tournament in Indonesia (12-19 October, 2011).

Owing to his immense potential as an upcoming Badminton prodigy and a future champion, Air India has roped him in to represent its Badminton Team in all national and international events.?As an Arunachalee, he has not only brought name and fame for himself and his family but also for his state Arunachal Pradesh and the North East.
