Givenchy, Hermes and Celine get elegant

PARIS (AP) ? True style doesn't try too hard.

That was the statement at Paris Fashion Week, alarmingly simple, but proved in a number of ready-to-wear presentations Sunday which heralded a move towards clean, simplified elegance.

Celine designer Phoebe Philo ? at the top of her game ? produced a chic display, effortlessly.

Three years after the lauded Briton's Celine debut, she delivered a strong show, which evoked her boho-bourgeois style in soft silhouettes with subtle architecture.

Another of Paris' influential designers, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, presented a new vision of style Sunday.

Again, Tisci channeled a clean look, simplifying the house silhouette in a less elaborate yet sophisticated collection.

Hermes ? the house of the jet-setting fashion buyer ? served up the elegance in its usual cocktail of travel, silk, leather and exotic cultural references.

Summing up his show, the house's designer Christophe Lemaire said it represented "a clean, sharp, modernist traveler."

Monday's highly anticipated shows include Stella McCartney, Chloe ? and the hottest ticket of the week ? Hedi Slimane's debut outing as designer for the rebranded Saint Laurent.

___

CELINE

Spring is about gentle contradictions, not color, Phoebe Philo seemed to say: Shown through a muted palette of black, white, navy and gray.

The real point of the show was the gentle play on contrasting lines, then textures, then form.

Loosely hanging silhouettes ? often with attention to neck details in high necks, bands and twists ? came in column or boxy shapes, with a couple of black A-line tuxedo-dresses for good measure.

The gloss of sheeny silks whispered a contrast against matte fabric.

Philo has often been noted for her chic "utilitarian tailoring," which she delivers with uncanny ease.

Here we saw it used artistically in hemline frays which turned into tassels, and twisted fabric that wrapped round the back sewn crudely together in a lump.

It's a style that wouldn't look out of place on Juliette Binoche, for example, who accepted a best-actress award at Cannes in 2010 in custom Celine.

The house is right in fancying themselves as Paris calendar's arty side.

When fashion insiders asked to see the mandatory program notes, there were wry smiles as they were handed a text-free book of collage pictures.

___

GIVENCHY

Trend-setting designer Riccardo Tisci changed the direction of Givenchy's ready-to-wear Sunday.

He simplified the silhouette to a more flattened and spread out front-and-shoulder emphasis in 37 black, white and gray looks.

A strong voice in the fashion conversation, Tisci's tailoring influences designers far and wide.

Last spring, for instance, he brought back the peplum.

Now, hardly a collection goes by without one cropping up.

The wilder bondage-gear touches that added spice to last season's equestrian-inspired trip, were gone here, in a less elaborate display ? but which had its moments of clean elegance.

A great feature was the clean, descending ripples in many of the looks which are sure to spread into other collections like wildfire.

But for a designer who likes to live dangerously, this more saleable collection? though a departure from last season ? felt at times like he was playing-it-safe.

___

HERMES

The fashion crowd got their summer holidays early ? flown first class across a vibrant mix of Polynesian prints and color-rich baroque foulard motifs.

Several of the models carried hang luggage. The mascot of the house, after all, is an airborne messenger.

The looks stopped off at every fabric under the sun: in full grain leather woven in silk, washed silk twill, plunged lambskin, satin piping and lovely indigo denim linen.

Colors too, were diverse in cappuccino, terracotta, sulphur, emerald, cobalt and ?the palette's most beautiful ? celadon.

The flight this season stopped off at the Netherlands and Germany? with tinges of the geometry and graphics of 1930s.

"I'm a modernist at heart," Lemaire said following the show, hosted next to Paris' Tuileries gardens.

This idea was worked into the collection's best looks with a feel of famed Dutch painter Piet Mondrian ? who used geometric shapes and blocks of colors that could be seen in several of the final looks.

Printed geometric floaty silk blouses and slightly jarring assorted pants made bold statements.

They also featured the slight play on masculine styles that Lemaire likes to toy with periodically: A cotton wool cravate appeared on most of the looks as a man's tie, tucked into a hoop.

The result was pure luxury, air delivered as only Hermes can.

___

KENZO

Kenzo headed back to the Southeast Asian jungle Sunday in a vibrant, fun collection that picked up their last menswear theme: A rainforest trek.

After just one year at the helm, the hard work of designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim has paid off: They've managed to re-stamp the brand with a cool, populist edge.

But they're serious about their work in other ways too: Fashion insiders had to live the catwalk theme ? literally ? by trekking to the far-flung venue, the Maison de Judo, on the Paris city limits.

In bold ? sometimes purposefully garish ? orange vermilions and greens, the collection threw up some great wide pants and boxy-shaped jackets as well as a lot of safari-style street wear.

Though some of the jungle printed ensembles looked overly busy ? a beautiful camouflage print made up for it with images of flowers that looked like leopard.

But there was art in the detail too, with the designers showing a flair for tailoring in great utilitarian features.

WWII weapons in Gulf of Mexico a concern, experts warn

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University researchers found these 55-gallon drums at a known chemical weapons dumpsite near the mouth of the Mississippi River. They suspect mustard gas was leaking out.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Oil and bombs don?t mix, yet there?s millions of pounds of unexploded World War II munitions dumped in the Gulf of Mexico that pose a risk to offshore drilling and the environment, researchers say.?

The military carried out the dumping from 1946 to 1970 ? including off the Pacific, Atlantic and Hawaii coasts???so it's no secret. But now that some of the containers used to store the munitions are more than 60 years old, the?researchers?say it's time to see them as a threat.

"The bottom line is that these bombs are a threat today and no one knows how to deal with the situation," Texas A&M oceanographer William Bryant said in a statement ahead of a briefing he'll give at a weapons disposal conference. "If chemical agents are leaking from some of them, that?s a real problem. If many of them are still capable of exploding, that?s another big problem."

Photos taken during surveys show that some of the chemical weapons canisters, such as those that carried mustard gas, appear to be leaking materials and are damaged, Bryant and others on his team reported.

The surveys have turned up 10 dump sites at 60 and 100 miles out???and one of them had a pipeline running through it.

Texas has the closest dump, followed by Louisiana, "not far from where the Mississippi River delta area is," Bryant said. "Some shrimpers have recovered bombs and drums of mustard gas in their fishing nets.

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University researchers found this unexploded, 500-pound bomb at a dumpsite near the mouth of the Mississippi River in 2008.

"No one seems to know where all of them are and what condition they are in today," he added. "The best guess is that at least 31 million pounds of bombs were dumped, but that could be a very conservative estimate.

"These were all kinds of bombs, from land mines to the standard military bombs, also several types of chemical weapons," he said. "Our military also dumped bombs offshore that they got from Nazi Germany right after World War II.

"Is there an environmental risk? We don?t know, and that in itself is reason to worry," he said.?

The hazards pose even more of a risk as the Obama administration and energy companies pick up the pace of drilling after the 2010 BP oil spill.

Ironically, unexploded ordnance was found in the offshore zone known as Mississippi Canyon where the BP well was drilled.

Pentagon

This chart lists some of the munitions dumpsites in the Gulf of Mexico, and what's there.

"My first thought when I saw the news reports of the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf two years ago were, 'Oh my gosh, I wonder if some of the bombs down there are to blame'," recalled Bryant.

That turned out not to be the case, but such World War II finds are not surprising in the oil industry.

Last year, BP shut a major North Sea pipeline for five days to remove a 13-foot unexploded German mine.?BP discovered the mine during an inspection, then spent months devising a plan to remove and safely detonate it.

Pentagon

This chart lists some of the munitions dump sites in the Gulf of Mexico, and what is there.

In 2001, BP and Shell found the wreckage of the U-166, a German WWII submarine, 45 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River.?

While the practice of dumping bombs and chemical weapons in the ocean ended 40 years ago, some effects are just now being seen, Terrance Long, founder of the?International Dialogue on Underwater Munitions, told Reuters.?Bryant will be briefing the group's conference, which begins Monday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"You can find munitions in basically every ocean around the world, every major sea, lake and river," Long said. "They are a threat to human health and the environment."

Voter registration problems widening in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? What first appeared to be an isolated problem in one Florida county has now spread statewide, with election officials in at least seven counties informing prosecutors or state election officials about questionable voter registration forms filled out on behalf of the Republican Party of Florida.

State Republican officials already have fired the vendor it had hired to register voters, and on Thursday took the additional step of filing an election fraud complaint against the company, Strategic Allied Consulting, with state officials.

A spokesman for Florida's GOP said the matter was being treated very seriously.

"We are doing what we can to find out how broad the scope is," said Brian Burgess, the spokesman.

Florida is the battleground state where past election problems led to the chaotic recount that followed the 2000 presidential election.

The Florida state party has paid Strategic Allied Consulting more than $1.3 million, and the Republican National Committee used the group for nearly $3 million of work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

The company said earlier this week that it was cooperating with elections officials in Florida. It said the suspect forms were turned in by one person, who has been fired.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," Fred Petti, a company attorney, said Thursday.

An email request to the company seeking additional comment, following the company's instructions, was not immediately returned Friday.

In Florida, it is a third-degree felony to "willfully submit" any false voter registration information, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

The questionable forms have showed up in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, as well as northeast Florida and the Florida Panhandle.

Election officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday handed over more than 100 suspect forms to local prosecutors. They did so days after officials in Palm Beach County also alerted prosecutors.

Ann Bodenstein, the elections supervisor for Santa Rosa County, said her staff started raising questions after an employee saw a form that changed the home address of a neighbor.

Paul Lux, election supervisor for Okaloosa County, said questionable forms in the Florida Panhandle appear to have all come from Strategic's effort based at the local Republican Party headquarters. He said his office has turned up dozens of suspect forms.

Lux said there have been forms that listed dead people and were either incomplete or illegible. He met with local prosecutors on Friday, but added that his staff was still going through hundreds of forms dropped off by Strategic employees.

Lux, who is a Republican, said he warned local party officials earlier this month when he first learned the company was paying people to register voters.

"I told them 'This is not going to end well,'" Lux said.

But Lux added that he did not blame the Republican Party of Florida.

"I can't place the blame on RPOF if they hired a firm and that firm wasn't following the rules they were given to follow," Lux said.

Lux also heard a complaint from the head of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, who raised questions about Strategic employees.

Mary Blackwell said the league's Okaloosa County chapter held a voter registration drive at a college campus in Niceville and that a person who was registering voters told her he was "lucky" he only had applications from Republicans or independents. Blackwell said she was "distressed" by the comments and became worried that he may be discarding voter registration forms filled out by Democrats.

The state party filed the complaint against Strategic Allied Consulting with state election officials, who can refer the case to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement if it is found legally sufficient.

INTERVIEW: Inhabitat Talks to Housing Reclaimed Author Jessica Kellner About Debt Free Homes

Housing Reclaimed, Inhabitat Interview, book review, jessica kellner, affordable housing, natural home and garden

INHABITAT: What inspired you to write Housing Reclaimed?

Jessica Kellner: I was inspired to write Housing Reclaimed after hearing stories on the news day after day about all the people losing their homes following the housing market crash of 2006 to 2008. In my work at Natural Home & Garden, I had seen many amazing homes built for next to nothing out of materials otherwise headed for the landfill. As people lost their homes after buying into a market in which housing prices had been falsely inflated, I began thinking about those homes as an alternative way that people could create shelter for themselves and their families without depending on the success of the real estate market and Wall Street. I saw it partially as a way to inspire hope in people?s minds about creating their own affordable housing, and partially as a way to fight back against a system that I believe robbed many people of their homes and financial livelihood to benefit wealthy investors.

INHABITAT: How has your work as Editor of Natural Home & Garden influenced your opinions on sustainable housing?

Jessica Kellner: My work at Natural Home & Garden has opened my eyes to the many options in sustainable housing, but what I?ve found truly influential in my work are the stories of people who have taken their homes into their own hands. Those who have said, ?I?m not going to do the conventional thing and have a little white box made of plywood and vinyl. I?m going to make something that is shaped by my lifestyle and my family and my needs.?

Not so long ago, our homes were reflective of our families and they changed over time. You had a baby, you added on. Your parents got older, you added a story or a second structure. Today our ?one size fits all? model doesn?t have the heart of those hand built spaces. And what I really wanted to show in the book is that that spirit isn?t just reserved for the wealthy who can afford a super-customized, architect-built dream home. We all have the power to do this.

Israeli prime minister drops a cartoonish bomb in UN speech on Iran's nuclear activity

JERUSALEM - When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held up a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb during his speech at the U.N., he set off an explosion of jokes and mockery ? but it also got plenty of attention.

The Bibi Bomb, as it's being called using Netanyahu's nickname, is the latest in a series of props used by the Israeli leader as he tries to keep the global spotlight on Iran's disputed nuclear program.

The image of Netanyahu and the diagram of a bomb with a lighted fuse was top news around the world. Headlines in Europe referred to Netanyahu's "bomb cartoon" and "comic strip."

"How much enriched uranium do you need for a bomb? And how close is Iran to getting it?" Netanyahu asked in his speech Thursday to the U.N. General Assembly. "Well, let me show you. I brought a diagram."

He proceeded to use a marker to draw a red line across what he said was a threshold that Iran was approaching and that Israel could not tolerate ? 90 per cent of the way to the uranium enrichment needed to make a nuclear weapon.

Netanyahu is a fan of visual aids. At the U.N. in 2009, he waved the blueprints for the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. For a speech to the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC in March, he brought letters between the World Jewish Congress and the U.S. government written during the Holocaust. Both documents were used to link the Nazis and the possible modern threat of a nuclear-armed Iran.

He also uses props on domestic issues. At a news conference in Jerusalem earlier this year, Netanyahu drew a tree to symbolize the state of Israel. As he explained his economic vision, he added roots, fruit and leaves to represent different facets of society. Journalists in the room chuckled, but the diagram made headlines.

"It's a perfect and extreme example of how politicians and leaders find themselves adapting their modes of communication in order to get the maximum amount of publicity," said Gadi Wolfsfeld, a professor of political communication at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, a college near Tel Aviv.

Within hours of Netanyahu's speech Thursday, the stunt was fodder for jokes.

A "Bibibomb" hashtag made waves on Twitter. Memes of Netanyahu and the bomb diagram surfaced, with the weapon replaced with a photo of President Barack Obama and Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli.

On "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart mocked Netanyahu's simplistic drawing by saying: "Bibi, bubbe. What's with the Wile E. Coyote nuclear bomb?" Stewart then presented his solution to counter such a weapon by holding up a drawing of an equally cartoonish giant magnet.

Barcelona's El Periodico newspaper poked fun at the drawing in a headline that said Netanyahu used "a ridiculous chart" to warn about the advance of Tehran's nuclear program.

Madrid's El Mundo said: "Netanyahu explains the nuclear threat with a comic strip."

Photos of the prime minister and the drawing were in a handful of Austrian newspapers, including The Kurier, headlined: "Netanyahu and the Bomb Cartoon."

But even the mockery was welcomed by Netanyahu's supporters.

The jokes "are maybe part of the success because it was an unforgettable speech that delivered its message," Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told Israel's Channel 2 TV. "Today everyone is talking about it."

It's not the first time that visual aids have been used in a U.N. speech. Displays of aerial photos were used in a 1962 speech by then-U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson on the Cuban missile crisis and satellite imagery was used in a 2003 presentation by then-U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to make the case that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

While the simplistic drawing displayed by Netanyahu succeeded in grabbing attention, it's not clear what effect it will have on the international community.

Netanyahu has repeatedly been at odds with world powers over Iran's nuclear program. He has argued that time is running out to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power and that the threat of force must be seriously considered.

While the international community has pushed for diplomacy as a way to dislodge Iran, Netanyahu has prodded world powers to set a red line on Iran. Obama has vowed to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power but has rejected Netanyahu's demands for setting an ultimatum past which the U.S. would attack. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel's destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups. Iran says its nuclear program is for civilian purposes, a claim that is rejected by much of the international community.

Wolfsfeld said the diagram could be viewed as patronizing or insulting by diplomats.

"In this familiar ploy, (Netanyahu) apparently bought himself a respectable spot in the pictures that will appear in American newspapers and on television," columnist Eitan Haber wrote in Friday's Yediot Ahronot newspaper. "But gimmicks and speeches don't destroy the Iranian nuclear threat."

Down Syndrome Awareness Center Set to Open in Cicero | NCC ...

? 2012 Casey Garrow

By Casey Garrow SYRACUSE (NCC NEWS) ? GiGi?s Playhouse is a national organization dedicated to helping people with Down syndrome.

A new center is currently under construction and will open to all children and adults with Down syndrome in November.

The?mission is to help people with the disability achieve their highest potential. The center will provide educational, therapeutic, physical fitness, recreation and other services.

Ally Donofrio is a mother of a 2-year-old with Down syndrome and felt inspired to start a center locally. Donofrio is opening GiGi?s Playhouse with the help of friends and other parents.

The center will specifically?include literacy and?math rooms for one-on-one tutoring, a stage for performances and a fitness room.

?I think having the kids being able to come into their own space and having their own special space is?really important,? Donofrio said.

Educate, inspire, achieve

The concept for the center started in the suburbs of Chicago in 2003. GiGi?s?Playhouse in Cicero will be the?13th location for the organization.

The nonprofit is run by volunteers around the community and funded entirely by donations.

The volunteers include parents, retired teachers, and elementary teachers and people whom simply love working with the kids.

?Anyone that has a passion for the kids and has the patience to work with the children then we will train them,? Donofrio said.

Psychologist, Dr. Carroll Grant, who specializes in developmental disabilities in young children such as Down syndrome, said it?s important to have centers like GiGi?s Playhouse offered to the community.

?The stronger we can be to help families support their child. The more strength they have to be available to their child and to promote the child?s development,??Dr. Grant said.

GiGi?s Playhouse hopes to the fill a gap in this community for many children and their families who need a support system.

Donofrio is still open to any?suggestions from the public as they prepare to open the center in a few short weeks.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Big Apple is getting another "biggest": the world's tallest Ferris wheel, part of an ambitious plan to draw New Yorkers and tourists alike to the city's so-called "forgotten borough."

The 625-foot-tall, $230 million New York Wheel is to grace a spot in Staten Island overlooking the Statue of Liberty and the downtown Manhattan skyline, offering a singular view as it sweeps higher than other big wheels like the Singapore Flyer, the London Eye, and a "High Roller" planned for Las Vegas.

Designed to carry 1,440 passengers at a time, it's expected to draw 4.5 million people a year to a setting that also would include a 100-shop outlet mall and a 200-room hotel.

It will be "an attraction unlike any other in New York City ? in fact, it will be, we think, unlike any other on the planet," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said as he unveiled the plans against the backdrop of New York Harbor. While the privately financed project faces various reviews, officials hope to have the wheel turning by the end of 2015.

The wheel would put Staten Island on the map of superlatives in a place where "biggest" is almost an expectation ? home to the nation's biggest city population, busiest mass-transit system, even the biggest Applebee's restaurant.

The attraction stands to change the profile of the least populous and most remote of the city's five boroughs, a sometime municipal underdog that has taken insults from New Jersey and was once known for having the world's largest ... landfill.

"It's going to be a real icon. The Ferris wheel will be Staten Island's Eiffel Tower," Sen. Charles Schumer enthused.

As a visible addition to the skyline around the harbor, the wheel "gives Staten Island an identity beyond its role as a suburban community," while letting it tap into the stream of tourist money in a city that drew 50.9 million visitors last year, said Mitchell Moss, a New York University urban policy professor.

The project is expected to bring $500 million in private investment and 1,100 permanent jobs to the borough's St. George waterfront, and the developers will pay the city $2.5 million a year in rent for the land.

Staten Island isn't entirely off the tourist map. Its free ferry is the city's third-largest tourist attraction, carrying an estimated 2 million visitors a year alongside millions of residents, officials say.

But the city has long struggled to entice tourists off the boat and into Staten Island. Much-touted Staten Island sightseeing bus tours fizzled within a year in 2009 for lack of ridership.

Australian tourists Leah Field and Adam Lica, for example, were riding the ferry Thursday for its views of the Statue of Liberty. They thought they might have lunch on the Staten Island side but weren't planning to explore further.

"We weren't sure what there is to do there," explained Lica, 32, of Melbourne. But were there a giant Ferris wheel, the couple likely would go ride it, he said.

But Henriette Repmann, a German university student, said she wouldn't bother.

"You don't have to have the biggest Ferris wheel in the world to get a good view of New York," Repmann, 20, of Leipzig, said Thursday as she visited the Empire State Building.

Largely a bedroom community for other parts of the city, Staten Island boasts about 470,000 residents and a minor league ballpark, cultural sites and quirky attractions, from locations in the video for Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" to the Staten Island Zoo, home to New York's answer to Pennsylvania's prognosticating groundhog. The Staten Island rodent bears the dubious distinction of having once bitten Bloomberg.

But Staten Island, the only one of the city's five boroughs not accessible by subway, tends to get overshadowed by its bigger neighbors, so much so that some have at times suggested it secede from the city.

And residents often bristle at an image shaped by such television shows as "Mob Wives" and "Big Ang" ? and by a former New Jersey beach town mayor who portrayed Staten Islanders in a blog post as heavy on hairspray and light on class. (The ex-mayor, Ken Pringle of Belmar, visited Staten Island in 2008 to make amends.)

Resident Miatta Bryant also thinks the wheel might bring the borough more respect.

"People always say Staten Island is so boring," the 26-year-old certified nursing assistant said.

The Ferris wheel, state Assemblyman Matthew Titone hopes, will show the world a different Staten Island than the one they see on TV.

"They will see our cultural institutions and will see that we are not idiots," he said. "Shirtless, musclebound idiots."

Q. I have received several r?sum?s that do not include a home address. Is this a red flag? ? L.Y., New York

A. Not necessarily. While some em??ployers may view such r?sum?s as being incomplete or be concerned that the applicants are trying to hide something, there are several good reasons why an individual may choose to leave his or her home address off a r?sum?.

1. Fear of disqualification based on location. Some employers admit that they prefer local candidates be??cause they?re worried that employees who have long commutes will have poor attendance records, will burn out sooner, or will leave as soon as they find something closer to home. Keep in mind that the applicant may be willing to relocate or could thrive despite a long commute.

2. Fear of bias based on location. Applicants may fear that stereotypes about low-income or predominantly minority neighborhoods could hurt their chances of being called.

3. Identity theft/privacy concerns. Individuals may be trying to limit the amount of personal information they give out.

4. Applicant is homeless, is living at a shelter, or is a victim of domestic abuse and is living at a safe house.

Elusive element 113 created at last

Scientists in Japan think they've finally created the elusive element 113, one of the missing items on the periodic table of elements.

Element 113 is an atom with 113 protons in its nucleus ? a type of matter that must be created inside a laboratory because it is not found naturally on Earth. Heavier and heavier synthetic elements have been created over the years, with the most massive one being element 118, temporarily named ununoctium.

But element 113 has been stubbornly hard to create. After years of trying, researchers at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science in Japan said Wednesday they finally did so. On Aug. 12, the unstable element was formed and quickly decayed, leaving the team with data to cite as proof of the accomplishment.

"For over nine years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Kosuke Morita, leader of the research group, said in a statement. 2. Vampire squid sucks up garbage, not blood
    3. A clock to keep time after universe dies
    4. Is the uncertainty principle misunderstood?

If confirmed, the achievement will mark the first time Japan has discovered a new element, and should make Japan the first Asian country with naming rights to a member of the periodic table. Until now, only scientists in the United States, Russia and Germany have had that chance.

"I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day 113 would be ours," Morita said. "For our next challenge, we look to the uncharted territory of element 119 and beyond."

Scientists are continually trying to create bigger and bigger atoms, both for the joy of discovery and for the knowledge these new elements can offer about how atoms work.

Most things in the universe are made of very simple elements, such as hydrogen (which has one proton), carbon (six) and oxygen (eight). For each proton, atoms generally have roughly the same number of neutrons and electrons. Yet the more protons and neutrons that are packed into an atom's nucleus, the more unstable the atom can become. Scientists wonder if there is a limit to how large atoms can be.

The first synthetic element was created in 1940, and so far 20 different elements have been made. All of these are unstable and last only seconds, at most, before breaking apart into smaller elements.

To synthesize element 113, Morita and his team collided zinc nuclei (with 30 protons each) into a thin layer of bismuth (which contains 83 protons). When 113 was created, it quickly decayed by shedding alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons each. This process happened six times, turning element 113 into element 111, then 109, 107, 105, 103 and finally, element 101, Mendelevium (also a synthetic element).

Morita's group seemed to create element 113 in experiments conducted in 2004 and 2005, but the complete decay chain was not observed, so the discovery couldn't be confirmed. Now that this specific pattern resulting in Mendelevium has been seen, the scientists say it "provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain."

PFT: Could regular NFL refs be back this Sunday?

horseshoes

Earlier today, ESPN reported that a deal between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association is ?at hand,? and that the real officials could be back to work this week.

Asked about the situation, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello quoted George Young, the late Giants G.M., with this admonition regarding negotiations:? ?There is no such thing as close.?

So there?s no deal until there?s a deal.? And, as of right now, there?s no deal.

Confirming that there?s no deal is NBC officiating consultant Jim Daopoulos, who told PFT by phone this afternoon that NFLRA president Scott Green emailed the rank-and-file from the meeting room with the explanation that a deal has not been struck.

Even if/when a deal is reached among the negotiators, it will have to be approved by at least half of the 121 officials.? As Daopoulos explained, the officials badly want to return to work, which could make them likely to accept whatever deal the NFLRA presents to them for a vote.

Still, questions remain.? Dapoulos explained that, as to the reportedly tentative agreement to maintain a 21-official developmental squad that won?t be used during a given season to ?bench? the regular officials, the officials want to know how the group will be assembled, what they will be doing during the season, and (perhaps most importantly) how they?ll be paid.

And while roughly 85 to 100 of the officials engage in a weekly conference call arranged by Ed Hochuli to discuss rule changes and other officiating issues in order to remain ready to work, Daopoulos explained that, as to roughly 20 of the locked-out officials, there?s real concern regarding their ability to pass a physical.

Then there?s the question of using replacements for a Thursday night game and regular officials for the balance of the weekend.? Daopoulos said that the league likely will prefer an all-or-none approach, for reasons of competitive balance.? if, for example, the Ravens lose to the Browns on a bad call from the replacements, the Ravens would be able to legitimately complain that, if they?d been scheduled to play on Sunday, they would have had the benefit of the real officials.

Regardless, no one will have the regular officials until a deal is done.? And a deal isn?t done ? and won?t be done ? until it?s done.

For now, I?m done.

Facebook stops asking you to snitch on your friends

9 hrs.

Earlier this week, the Internet had a mini meltdown over false reports that Facebook may?ve posted users' old?private messages.

Though it was swiftly deemed untrue,?even the French government demanded answers on this non-scandal. All of that overshadowed the real news, a creepy misstep of which the world?s largest social network really?is guilty: asking Facebook users to identify friends who may be using fake names on the site.

?Help Us Make Facebook Better,? read a survey prompt that kicked up a comparatively minor amount of ire when it made the rounds on Twitter. ?Is this your friend?s real name?? the survey went on, showing a photo of one of the recipient?s Facebook friends and multiple choice answers, ?Yes,? ?No,? ?I don?t know this person,? and ?I don?t want to answer.?

?Your response is anonymous and won?t affect your friend?s account,? Facebook assured on the poll question, which Facebook representive?Fred Wolens reiterated to NBCNews.com.?

Though Facebook does have a real name policy, Wolens said this particular poll was one of many anonymous surveys Facebook uses to tweak its algorithms. He provided the following company statement:?

This was a limited survey we have already concluded. We are always looking to gauge how people use Facebook and represent themselves to better design our product and systems. We analysed these surveys only using aggregate data and responses had zero impact on any user's account.

According to Wolens, the survey was received by a small amount of users. Exactly how small, he wouldn?t say. News of it?spread when?Twitter user @chapeaudefee tweeted a screenshot and the comment, ?Facebook wants to know if your friends? names are real. Are you going to be the snitch??

Outraged? Probably. You know how you love to be outraged at Facebook. Shocked? Not so much.?

The Internet is currently so unperturbed by this latest turn, YouTube has yet to produce a single ?Hitler reacts to Facebook asking you to snitch on your friends? video ? though a long history of totalitarian regimes asking its citizens to turn on their neighbors is not lost on those who are offended by the poll, despite its reassurances.

?The whole idea of snitching is highly dodgy,? writes privacy blogger Paul Bernal.??It?s creepy ? and it helps build at atmosphere of distrust, breaking down the very things that make social networks good,? he continues. ?The social relationships that are the heart of Facebook are meant to do ?good? things ??not be a route by which bad things are spread.?

Oh Canada! Why Are You So Hard on Netflix?

There has been a lot of news about Netflix and Canada recently, including some bizarre quotes from a Netflix executive, so journalist Peter Nowak is with us to explain and expound upon the backstory of what's turned into a pretty entertaining and pretty important story north of the border. First off, let me ask you about some interesting quotes that I just mentioned from the Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

Dell Inspiron 15R-5520

The most recent iteration of the Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 ($599 list) offers the latest third-generation Intel processor, a newly designed chassis, and generally good performance for just under $600. This 15-inch desktop replacement laptop isn't loaded with features but it does provide Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity and has a switchable lid. However, its battery life could be better and its shiny screen can be distracting.

Design
Like last year's model, the new Inspiron 15R-5520 is done up with a plastic lid and smooth rounded corners. Dell calls the finish "Moon Silver" but it looks more like a brushed black metal finish than anything else. A Dell logo sits squarely in the middle of the lid, and a band of metal trim envelops both the lid and the base. If you want to change it up a little you can remove the lid and replace it with a Fire Red, Lotus Pink, or Peacock Blue colored lid, available from Dell for $28.49 each.

The chassis measures 1.3 by 14.9 by 9.9 inches, similar to the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) , but at 6.05 pounds the Inspiron 15R-5520 is heavier than the Sony E15 by a little more than half a pound. The brushed metal keyboard deck is relatively smudge resistant and feels cool to the touch. It holds a chiclet-style keyboard with good-sized black keys that are responsive and offer just the right amount of flex without feeling mushy. You don't get a dedicated number pad on this model but you do get three Dashboard keys at the top of the deck. One key launches the Windows Mobility Center where you can change system settings, another opens the Dell Audio app where you can tweak audio settings, and the third is user programmable. The recessed touchpad matches the keyboard deck and provides plenty of room for accurate gesture control and the two oversized mouse buttons are whisper-quiet.

The Inspiron 15R-5520's 15.6-inch display has a 1,366-by-768 resolution and a glossy coating that will make you feel like you're staring into a mirror when the screen is dark or during scenes when there's a dark background. That said, the panel delivers a bright picture with vibrant colors and sharp image detail. It loses its luster when viewed from an angle, however; colors appear washed out when viewed from the side and the screen gets significantly darker if you tilt the panel too far backward.

Features
All four of the included USB ports are of the 3.0 kind, and one of them is a PowerShare port that allows you to charge USB devices while the system is turned off. Video outputs include HDMI and VGA ports, an Ethernet port, and headphone and microphones jacks. Wireless features include 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, and the optical drive is a tray loading DVD multi-drive.

Rounding out the feature set is a 500GB hard drive with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. Also installed is Dell Stage, an icon-driven interface that provides easy access to photos, videos, music, and Dell's DataSafe and Support Center utilities. There's a fair amount of bloatware installed as well, including trial versions of McAfee Security Center and Nero, an eBay link, and Windows Live Essentials. Dell covers the Inspiron 15R-5520 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 Fueled by Intel's 2.5GHz Core i5-3210M Ivy Bridge processor paired with 6GB of system memory, the Inspiron 15R-5520 scored 2,645 on our PCMark 7 benchmark test. That's pretty much in line with the 2,495 points scored by the Sony VAIO E15 and significantly higher than the 2,255 points of the Asus U56E-BBL6 ($699.99 list, 4 stars), which uses a second-generation Core i5 processor. On our multimedia tests, the Inspiron 15R-5520's Handbrake (1:41) and Photoshop (3:53) scores were identical to those of the Dell Inspiron 17R-7520 and very close to the Sony VAIO E15. Once again, the second-generation-based Asus U56E-BBL6 trailed the pack.

Dell Inspiron 15R-5520

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU performed as expected; it managed to churn out 24 frames per second (fps) on both our medium-quality (1,024-by-768) Lost Planet 2 DX9 and Crysis DX10 gaming tests, but it couldn't handle the high-quality settings at its native resolution (1,366-by-768).

The Inspiron 15R-5520 couldn't complete the MobileMark 2007 battery test so we used our anecdotal 10-hour DVD rundown test. It lasted 4 hours 29 minutes, but can't be directly compared to MobileMark scores.

The Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 is a capable desktop replacement laptop that delivers solid third-generation Core i5 power at a wallet-friendly price. It keeps pace with the competition performance-wise and is equipped with a generous selection of wireless options, but its shiny display and narrow viewing angles hold it back. If you require more storage and an extra 2GB of system memory, consider our Editors' Choice for budget laptops, the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS). You'll have to part with an extra $150 though.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Elmo will be carrying a new tune on "Sesame Street." Several, actually.

A shift in how the popular puppet is deployed marks the most visible change on "Sesame Street," the children's program that began its 43rd season on public television on Monday.

The "Elmo's World" segment is being phased out after 13 years, replaced by a new segment, "Elmo the Musical." Ten new skits, each lasting 11 minutes, have been prepared.

The idea is to incorporate music into the "Sesame Street" emphasis on introducing concepts in science, technology, engineering and math to the preschool-aged viewers, said Rosemarie Truglio, senior vice president of education and research at Sesame Workshop, the company that makes the series.

Elmo will use singing and dancing to draw attention to the need for problem-solving skills and make the learning entertaining, she said. The character will be featured in "Sea Captain the Musical," ''Mountain Climber the Musical" and "President the Musical."

The current Elmo, geared largely to 2-year-olds, had some repetitive music segments. "Elmo the Musical" will have seven or eight songs in each skit, and will be aimed at preschool youngsters who are slightly older.

"With really young children, the arts are very relevant to their lives," Truglio said. "We want to be able to use the arts as a tool."

"Sesame Street" began its emphasis on science and technology last season.

The children's show is also bringing in its usual series of guest celebrities this season: Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Melissa McCarthy, Steve Carell, John Hamm, Zac Effron, Blake Griffin, the rock band Train and rapper Common.

First-Ever Treatment For Rare Childhood Aging Disease Shows ...

Drug Originally Developed for Cancer Proves Effective for Children with Progeria

BOSTON, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Results of the first-ever clinical drug trial for children with Progeria, a rare, fatal "rapid-aging" disease, demonstrate the efficacy of a farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI), a drug originally developed to treat cancer. The clinical trial results, completed only six years after scientists identified the cause of Progeria, included significant improvements in weight gain, bone structure and, most importantly, the cardiovascular system, according to The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) and Boston Children's Hospital. The study results were published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Epub ahead of print).

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), is a rare, fatal genetic disease characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. All children with Progeria die of the same heart disease that affects millions of normal aging adults (atherosclerosis), but instead of occurring at 60 or 70 years of age, these children may suffer heart attacks and strokes as early as age 5, with the average age of death at 13 years.

"To discover that some aspects of damage to the blood vessels in Progeria can not only be slowed by the FTI called lonafarnib, but even partially reversed within just 2.5 years of treatment is a tremendous breakthrough, because cardiovascular disease is the ultimate cause of death in children with Progeria," said Leslie Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study, medical director for PRF, and mother of a child with Progeria. In addition, Dr. Gordon is a staff scientist at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and associate professor at Hasbro Children's Hospital and Alpert Medical School of Brown University.?

Results Yield Improvements in One or More Study Measures for All Children
Twenty-eight children from sixteen countries participated in the two-and-a-half year drug trial, representing 75 percent of known Progeria cases worldwide at the time the trial began. Of those, 26 are children with the classic form of Progeria. The children traveled to Boston every four months to receive comprehensive medical testing through Boston Children's Hospital's Clinical and Translational Study Unit.

Treatment consisted of the FTI lonafarnib, supplied by Merck & Co., given to children orally, twice-a-day over the course of the study, under the supervision of principal investigator Mark Kieran, M.D., Ph.D., director of pediatric medical neuro-oncology at the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center.

The research team, which included specialists at Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham & Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, evaluated the children's rate of weight gain compared to their pre-therapy rate as the primary outcome because children with Progeria experience severe failure to thrive, and have a consistent, very slow linear rate of weight gain over time. Researchers also examined arterial stiffness (a predictor of heart attack and stroke in the general population), bone density and rigidity (indicators of osteoporosis). Every child completing the study showed improvement in an ability to gain additional weight, increased flexibility of blood vessels or improved bone structure.

Results included improvement in one or more of the following areas:

  • Weight: One in three children demonstrated a greater than 50 percent increase in annual rate of weight gain or switched from weight loss to weight gain, due to increased muscle and bone mass.
  • Bone Structure: On average, skeletal rigidity (which was highly abnormal at trial initiation) improved to normal levels after FTI treatment.
  • Cardiovascular: Arterial stiffness, strongly associated with atherosclerosis in the general aging population, decreased by 35 percent. Vessel wall density also improved with treatment.

Following the 2003 discovery of the gene that causes Progeria, researchers identified FTIs as a potential drug treatment for Progeria. Children with Progeria have a genetic mutation that leads to the production of the protein progerin, which is responsible for Progeria. Progerin blocks normal cell function and part of its toxic effect on the body is caused by a molecule called a "farnesyl group," which attaches to the progerin protein. FTIs act by blocking the attachment of the farnesyl group onto progerin.

"In the early stages of planning for this clinical trial, we realized that my team's experience using FTIs to treat children with brain cancer could bring together PRF's preclinical research efforts and the expertise we needed to study the drug in children with Progeria," said Kieran, the study's senior author and associate professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. "The premise behind studying this drug was that by stopping the attachment of the farnesyl group onto progerin in children with Progeria, progerin may be inactivated, reducing some effects of the disease."

"PRF provides a model for disease research organizations, and is a good example of successful translational research, moving from gene discovery to clinical treatment at an unprecedented pace," added Dr. Kieran.

Since PRF's founding in 1999, the organization and its scientific partners have identified the genetic mutation that causes the disease, funded preclinical research and funded clinical trials. A second clinical trial, funded by the National Institutes of Health and PRF, is currently underway and more trials are expected to follow.

"The partnership between The Progeria Research Foundation, the research team and these courageous families was essential for success," said Dr. Gordon. "It required identifying children and their home doctors from around the globe, obtaining the essential pre-trial clinical information, transporting families to and from Boston, supplying translators both inside and outside of the hospital setting, and putting together a multidisciplinary clinical team to assess treatment effects. But it was all worth it, and I believe we have set in motion a blueprint for successful treatment trials for children with Progeria and for other rare diseases."

"The results of this study provide our family with excitement and hope for Megan's future," said Sandy Nighbor, mother of Megan, a 12-year-old child who participated in the clinical trial. "We're grateful to The Progeria Research Foundation and all of the doctors for their commitment to helping my daughter and all children with Progeria."

Progeria Linked to Normal Aging Process
Previous research shows that progerin is also produced in the general population and increases in the body with age. A number of studies successfully linked progerin with normal aging, including a causal link between progerin and genetic instability, specifically telomere dysfunction in the aging process. Researchers plan to continue researching the effect of FTIs, which may help scientists learn more about cardiovascular disease that affects millions, as well as the normal aging process.??

"One of the main reasons we achieved breakthrough results in this first trial is because of the tremendous supporters who provided funding, and helped get us one step closer to achieving our ultimate goal ? a cure for Progeria," said Audrey Gordon, Executive Director of PRF. "Every donation makes a difference. With continued support, we will fund research that will not only allow children with Progeria around the world to live long and healthy lives, but may also advance our understanding of the normal aging process that affects us all."

About The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF)
The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) was established in 1999 to find the cause, treatment and cure for Progeria ? a rapid aging disease that causes children to die from heart disease or stroke at an average age of 13 years.? In the past 13 years, research conducted in partnership with PRF has identified the gene that causes Progeria and possible treatments.? PRF funded and coordinated this first-ever Progeria clinical trial.? How and Why to Make Your Website - Duct Tape Marketing

Talk about mobile and tablet usage dominates computer hardware conversations and the implications are one of the hottest topics in marketing right now as well.

Website visitors are now consuming content from our sites in a dizzying array of devices, formats and orientations. There was a time when browser compatibility was a designer?s primary concern. Today, designers and site owners need to be increasingly concerned with media compatibility or more to the point, the size and shape of the viewer?s screen.

The use of mobile and tablet devices for browsing has crept past 10% in my stats and my guess is this is undereported as some device detection goes unreported. The number one device is the iPad, with the iPhone a close number two.

Tablets, including Samsung Galaxy, Kindle, Nook and Google?s Nexus 7, as well as the still dominate iPad, are poised to make huge strides in adoption and usage in 2013 and may take usage on some sites into the 25% range.

So, yes, now is the time to get serious about making sure mobile and tablet visitors to your site have a great experience.

The first step might be to get a picture of where your site is currently. Test your site?s mobile readiness here, view your site as it might look on dozens of devices here and check out this great education resource.

Whether you decide to hire someone to do it for you, do it yourself or find a solution in the middle, one term that?s important to understand is media queries. Media queries allow web developers to change the layout of a page based on the media that?s displaying it ? whether that means adapting it to fit a smaller screen or just stripping it down to the essentials before it heads to a printer.

The term and concept has been around for years ? remember visiting a site that had a print friendly option ? that site was using what we call today a theme switcher to change the design based on a media query.

This concept is what drives a great deal of what goes on behind the scenes in device specific design.

Below are some of the options you might explore as you determine the best strategy for adopting mobile and tablet design experiences for your website.

Build it for you

You can simply hire a designer to create a mobile friendly design and then integrate it into your current design. In many ways this is how you might get the most useful, yet most costly design. A good mobile designer should understand that good mobile design is more than simply making everything smaller. The best mobile design starts with understanding intent and delivering the must have content beautifully.

Add a Plugin

One very simply fix for WordPress blog sites is to explore a number of plugins that do the heavy lifting of detection and switching and come with mobile themes built in. Plugins such as WPTouch Pro and WPMobile Detector are good options. You might also consider simply adding a mobile theme, such as Mobile Pro as your theme.

Automatic mobilization

There are a growing number of what might be called automatic solution ? services that take your current site and automatically create a mobile version. These tools attempt to make sense of the navigation and core content, but also allow for some amount of customization and addition of widgets for things like social sharing, contact forms and eCommerce functions.

Dudamobile works very well and has several large integrations including Google Mobile Ads. bMobilized is another player that includes some great customizations, including a large library of widgets.-

Adopt Responsive Design

Another growing option that is preferred by some is something called Responsive Design. The idea behind this concept is that instead of using mobile sites or themes, the design uses media queries to determine the best way to show the content based on the user?s device. The practice makes use of CSS, fluid grids and flexible images to create one experience responsive to many environments.

WordPress theme makers are quickly creating responsive design themes that can replace the need for mobile and tablet specific tactics. Studio Press has many responsive design themes and the Responsive theme also draws high praise.

For those that want to dive in and learn more about this topic check out Responsive Web Design by Ethan Marcotte, The book explores CSS techniques and design principles, including fluid grids, flexible images, and media queries

If you want to explore fluid grid design in a truly geeky way have a look at Gridpack.

Build Your Own App

Of course one final option that you might explore is the app route. There are a number of tools that make it fairly simple to build your own apps. This assumes that you have content that people will want to visit using your their device?s native operating system rather than the web.

It?s a fun option, but might not be the most useful for many businesses.

However, if you want to explore jQueryMobile is a good place to start and check out drag and drop options such as MyAppBuilder and AppMakr.
